I have a fast computer, yet, for some reason, with nearly nothing running, it bogs down to a crawl so windows don't even respond. I wait, and it's fine again for another 10 minutes, an hour, who knows. Then dead slow again.

It's driving me crazy, and I have no idea what to do to attempt fixing it.

I don't see anything in process explorer that could be the culprit.

Thoughts? Are there tools for scanning I should run?

I'll leave it overnight yet, but so far, 2 passes complete, a third nearly complete, and no issues yet.

Any other things I can try after this scan is complete?

    heyya gibble, long time.

laptop, desktop? Does this happen no matter WHAT is running, even if it's just idling? Have you checked the event log?

Also, domain or home pc? I've seen this on pc's that used to be on a domain and are trying to re-authenticate.

    Hey, ya, been a while.

Home pc, it doesn't matter what is or isn't running. It doesn't matter if it just turned on, or has been running for hours or days.

is the stoppage regular, or just absolutely random?

try clearing your event logs (start > run > eventvwr.msc, dump all logs), then when it acts up again see if anything is getting written there.

Is it wired or wireless? Lapper or desktop?

It's a wired desktop. I'll clear the logs tonight and see what happens. It's random but happens often.

Long time. But my office was a mess so I didn't use it much and didn't care to try and fix it. Oops

Any suggestions of apps to run and scan for any unwanted/malicious programs running?

what AV do you have running? You can always run MBAM to scan for active threats; it's not an antivirus, as I'm pretty sure you know, but rather a scanner for after the fact. Can't hurt, at least.
