WinXP Home, SP2, P3 498, 256 RAM

Everything seems much slower lately. Opening Outlook Express, IE, Netscape, MS Office programs, etc. all open very slowly. I've been getting messages about Virtual Memory. I don't remember exactly what the message was, but I'm looking for ways to speed things up. I deleted ALL temp files.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is the HiJackThis log:

In your specs at the very top of your post, does "498" stand for 498 MHz? If that's the case, you're using a processor speed that's really too slow for XP. It'll run on 256 MB of RAM, but it really should have more - if your computer supports adding more.

What's the brand name, model name, and model number of that computer?

----------------------------------------------------------------

You're using an old version of HijackThis. You need to replace it with version 1.99.1 and then post a new log. Select the .exe file and not the .zip file.

----------------------------------------------------------------

You appear to have AVG and Norton antivirus programs both installed and running at the same time. That'll slow down a computer and cause other problems.

----------------------------------------------------------------

You've got some unnecessary programs running in the background that don't need to be. That can cause problems and impede performance. Let's get the list trimmed down a bit.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - Startup(tab). Remove the checkmark from the following:

jusched.exe

realsched.exe

dumprep
(both entries)

digstream.exe

msnmsgr.exe

(Note: You can start this chat program manually when you're ready to use it)

reader_sl.exe

osa9.exe

Once you're done, click Apply - OK, then reboot. When the SCU window appears during reboot, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in it and then click OK.

Thank you for the quick reply!

Do you recommend I only use one anti-virus program? If so, which one should I remove from startup?

According to the Crucial site and the Kingston site, your Dell Dimension XPS T500 supports a maximum of 768 MB of PC100 SDRAM. If that's the case, it either has 2 - 128 MB modules or 1 - 256 MB module installed in its 3 RAM slots.

You definitely should have another 256MB installed. A computer shop can do it for you for a very reasonable price, unless you know how to do it yourself. It's the most cost-effective performance boost that you can give that computer.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I'd keep Grisoft AVG and get rid of Symantec Norton. It's not easy to clean out of a computer after it's been uninstalled, as there are several leftover files and registry entries it'll leave behind to get rid of. Depending on what version you're using, the Symantec site may provide an uninstall tool that's supposed to do the job.

----------------------------------------------------------------

If you look at your new log, the new version of HijackThis adds an O20 entry and several O23 entries to the log. This is normal with Windows XP, so don't let it throw you.

I see you were unable to get rid of osa9.exe in the MSCONFIG startup tab list. Go back there and see if there's any entries, such as FindFast or Microsoft Office. If there is, uncheck it/them, apply the change, then reboot.

Post a new log here afterwards.

I'll look into adding more RAM. I've installed RAM before, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I've done everything else so far including a defrag last night with no speed improvement. I'm not sure why this is happening since the system ran much faster not long ago. I've had this system for 6 years now I just don't want to invest in a new one yet...soon, but not yet.

Thanks again for your help!!

Here's the new log:

The startup list has been trimmed down as much as we can do it, so there's no more work there to do.

You might consider reducing or eliminating some of the graphic "eye candy" that XP is notorious for and which can impede performance in an old computer. All of the following can be done via Display in the Control Panel.

1. Get rid of the screensaver(if you're using one) and get rid of the wallpaper.

2. Change the color palette from 24-bit or 32-bit color to 16-bit color.

3. Go into the graphic effects and do away with all the "Fade" and "Slide" commands.

Will do. Thanks again so much for your help.

By the way... do you know anything about the program "FreeRegistryFix"?

I downloaded it last night in hope that might help. It found a ton of registry problems and (supposedly) fixed them.

Thanks again!

No, I'm not familiar with FreeRegistryFix. I use EasyCleaner 2.0.6.380 and RegSupreme 1.3.0.33.

Be real careful about which "cleaner" you use. Some will do more harm than good. It's wise to get advice from others on this forum and elsewhere before you try a new utility.
