Not enough information to make much of a guess. W98 is generally slower networking than NT based O/S versions, but that seems like a lot.

It could be based on disk speeds, NIC speeds, processor speeds, etc. A lot of things affect file transfer speed speed over the network.

I just booted my dual-boot machine into W98 and copied a 584mb ISO image to it from my 2K machine, 1:20 was the copy time. 100mbit Netgear card in the machine, 800mhz, 7200 RPM drive.

Your results appear substandard, you may want to look at configuration issues.

Thank you for your reply & test.
The configuration of both my pc's is the same, only different operating systems (XP & W98)

Have you done anything like running a disk benchmark like DiskSpeed32 to see if W98 is running the disk in PIO mode? Also, are the W98 machines running at 100mhz full duplex on the Ethernet? How about routing issues, are there some other bottlenecks that could be affecting their speed?
