    Hi:

My system (XP on a laptop) is running slow. Programs take a while to load, sometimes hang up and even opening my browser seem to be going slower than ever. The programs I use the most are QuickBooks Pro, Outlook 2003, Act! 2005, Word and Excel. I have Norton Internet Security 2006 (and get the ccApp hang up on shut down).

Any advice on getting improved performance? BTW, I looked through some 2005 tech guy posts on ccApp problems. Saw some similarities but before I started messing with the registries or uninstalling and renaming programs I wanted to start off with a general performance enhancement look.

    Thanks much.

Hi: You are "experienced" if you've seen Hendrix 3 times.

Half way through the scans found 43! adware and 3 viruses. What's with Norton and why doesn't it catch what this freeware does???

    T.

Ran its online diagnostic tool and now figure I should do something about all the recommended actions. For example, under Registry Autoruns, numerous files/processes have "bad" elements to them. I'm supposed to "Compare details with your local values and/or search Google."

It seems I should attempt to fix these things but short of having a degree in Systems, I'm not sure what to do.

    Any shortcuts?

Nowadays, malware issues don't really offer shortcuts. And I'm sorry to say, but Norton hasn't exactly been given high praises around here. AVG provides a pretty good antivirus, and ZoneAlarm is a top notch firewall (links are available in my signature).

To assist in your problem, we need you to download HijackThis (http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip). Extract it to a folder like C:\Program Files\HijackThis. Run it, and select 'Scan'. Do not fix anything yet, just select 'Save log', and copy the contents of the log to your next post.

An expert will be along shortly to review your log.
