My computer has a really slow shut down time. Sometimes as long as ten minutes. I also get messages about CCapp.exe and shellcon hidden window not responding during shutdown. The CCapp file will shut itself down and continue shutdown of XP. However, the shellcon window will stay there until I shut it down. I have run Ad-aware SE and always delete files if it picks up any. Please help, I am losing patience with my system.

I have done a virus scan and nothing came up. I have defragmented the drive after the problem started and it did not help. I am defragmenting again just for good measure. As far as components on my computer, I am not sure what you want but I will give it a try.

Just wondering if you may have too many programmes in your launch/startup log. The more things that are run on start, the longer the machine takes, same with closing down. I run a little programme calle WinPatrol Plus that tells me what is in my startup, what needs to be there and what can be safely removed. It also lets you know what shouldn't be there and what can cause problems. WinPatrol lets u know if something is trying to access your startup or registry and eats cookies as well. You also might want to run Spyblaster and Spybot Search and Destroy in conjunction with AdAware Se as this covers most of the nasties infecting machines. I found that when I ran Nortons, my machine definitely took longer to start up and close down due to all the extra processes Nortons has running. It is very resource hungry you know. Hope this helps a little.

I disabled Norton from running on Startup and now the problem seems to be fixed. Shut down is quick and startup is a little quicker. I still run Norton weekly to check for problems but I then shut it back down. Thank you all for your help.

If Norton is your antivirus program that is not a good idea to remove it from start up and only use it once a week . You are leaving yourself wide open for trouble .

I suggest you go here http://forums.techguy.org/t110854.html

Download AVG 7 and install it . Install and set it up . Make sure NORTON is SHUT DOWN completely .
Run AVG 7 and see if it effects your startup / shutdown times .

If things are OK you can still use Norton weekly as long as you shutdown AVG 7 completely each time so they will not conflict with each other.

Better yet if you want a weekly scan use Housecall or Panda or any other free on line scanner available at the above link . They are always up to date .
