Go Start>Run and type in msconfig. Trawl through the startup options to see if there's anything you don't need automatically to start every time XP boots up. Untick the boxes of any of them, click on Apply and OK and the system will want to restart. When it does, tick the "don't show me this message again" and hit OK. This may help but there's nothing quite like regular housekeeping, cleaning out old files, etc. and running good quality spy and ad tracking programmes such as Spybot and AdAware SE personal, which are both free.

After you've run those two, get on to the Microsoft site and download and install SP2 - whatever you've heard about it.

before you install SP2 make sure your system is clean of spyware or you will have many problems trust me in this case SP2 wont speed up your computer boot time
have you install any software or hardware in the last couple of days?
