How much RAM is on that computer?

You should also uninstall Windows Search 4.0 from your "Add or Remove Programs". It's a system resource hog.

TSG is Tech Support Guy, where you are now.

Try Safe Mode to see if your computer is still slow in that mode.

As for antivirus, you can try the free Avira Antivir, Avast or AVG.

Right-click MY COMPUTER, click Properties - Hardware - Device Manager, then click the + in

    Network Adapters

    What's listed in that heading?

If there's also a heading named

    Other Devices

    advise what's listed in it.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

You didn't mention if your computer is a laptop or a desktop.

What's its brand name, model name, model number?

Here is the support and software site for the Compaq Presario V5209US laptop. I suggest that you save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can refer to it when needed.

It supports up to 2 GB of RAM, and it appears that you've already maxed it out. (y)

You didn't reply to my comments concerning the Device Manager.

Double-click the Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN entry to open its properties window, then click Driver(tab).

What's the driver version and driver date listed?

Does that device show as working properly?
