The response to the issue below seems to address my concern perfectly, but since I have some different stuff on my computer I'd love someone to address my computer specifically.
P.S. I'm not particularly computer savy
    Thank You,
    Richard

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click it to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

    Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log file here.

The ASUS M2NS-NVM motherboard in that computer has 4 slots and supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM - a maximum of 1 GB in each slot.

It appears to currently have 1 GB of RAM.

You should consider increasing the amount of RAM to 2 GB.

    It uses DDR2 PC2-5300(DDR2-667) modules.

I assume these are hardware modules which I purchase and install. I assume this is not a difficult process to accomplish if I am even moderately competent with my hands.

One obvious reason why your computer is running sluggish is because it has a very bloated startup load - too many programs and services auto-starting and running in the background.

It may also be infested with malware, spyware, etc..

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

    Hi flavallee,
I've finally managed to get the requested data from the Startup Items(see below). It won't lay out in this dialogue box as it appears, but I've sent it. If I could send it in an attachment and it would help, let me know.
    Thanks,
    Richard

All I needed were the names in the "Startup Item" column. I didn't need the information in the other columns.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark in these startup entries:

    NvCpl

    SSBkgdUpdate

    pptd40nt

    IndexSearch

    BrMfcWnd

    BrStDvPt

    brctrcen

    QTTask

    iTunesHelper

    nwiz

    AdobeARM

    GoogleToolbarNotifier

    msmsgs

    Ares

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

Note: Some of the startup entries don't need to auto-start at all, and some of them can be manually started when needed. Having all of them auto-start and run all the time will lengthen startup time and will slow down performance and speed.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list clearly.

Double-click these service entries, one at a time, to open their properties window:

    Adobe Flash Player Update

    Agere Modem Call Progress Audio

    Forceware Web Interface

    Google Software Updater

    InstallDriver Table Manager

    Mozilla Maintenance Service

    ForceWare IP Service

    ForceWare user log service

    Yahoo! Updater

Change "Startup Type" to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

After you're done, close the services window.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    Restart the computer.

When the small "System Configuration Utility" window appears during restart, ignore its message.

Put a checkmark in the "Do not show - - - " box before you click OK to close that window.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

Run the computer for awhile and make sure that everything is still working okay.

    Submit a new HiJackThis log.

    ------------------------------------------------------------
