Hello, I hope there is someone here that can help me...

Usual symptoms (from what I have read in anyway). Started with bogus antivirus ads (AV Gold), & upon restart, the error message flashed:" A Fatal Error in IE has occurred at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01)+00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c " etc. etc.

I have NO desktop, start menu or icons whatsoever, & only my version of Opera & Firefox remains able to run internet via Taskmanager. Ran Adaware & only picked up 1 or 2 minor threats...

I have tried a few of the known fixes, but anything I try is virtually impossible, & flags the error message "This application has failed to start because WININET could not be found," etc etc. (Also no control panel to launch)

Hi and welcome to TSG,

Please read these instructions carefully and copy them to notepad then save the notepad file to your desktop so you can refer to them. Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner.html to download and install CCleaner but do NOT use it yet. You will use it later in safe mode.

Go here: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe and download the Killbox and save it to your desktop.

Go here: http://attachments.techguy.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=57951 and download smitfraudfix.zip file. Unzip it to your desktop and have it ready to run later.

Click here to see how to boot into safe mode as you will need to do this later:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

Go to Start – Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid
PSGuard

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confirmation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\wp.exe

C:\wp.bmp

C:\bsw.exe

C:\Windows\sites.ini

C:\Windows\popuper.exe

C:\Windows\system32\hhk.dll

C:\Windows\System32\wldr.dll

C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe

C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe

C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe

C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\winnook.exe

C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html

C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe

C:\Windows\system32\msole32.exe

C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

Exit the Killbox.

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start - Search and under More advanced search options, make sure there is a check by Search System Folders and Search hidden files and folders and Search system subfolders

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools - Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is checked. Also uncheck Hide protected operating system files and Hide extensions for known file types. Now click Apply to all folders. Click Apply then OK

Find and delete these folders if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Services
C:\Windows\System32\Log Files
C:\Program Files\PSGuard

IMPORTANT!: If you forget to run the smitfraud.reg file you will not be able to boot your computer normally. DO NOT FORGET THIS STEP. Locate smitfraudfix.reg on your desktop and double click on it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After you receive the prompt merged successfully, follow the rest of the instructions below.

Start Ccleaner and click Run Cleaner

Go to Control Panel - Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.

Restart back into Windows normally now.

Download The Hoster from here: http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip. Unzip the file and press Restore Original Hosts and press OK. Exit Program.

Run Panda’s ActiveScan online virus scan from here: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When the scan is finished, have it delete anything that it cannot clean. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself. Save the results from the scan.

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Hi Cookiegal, Thanks for your reply, but I'm not having much success... I have downloaded those items you mentioned no problem, & ran Killbox, deleted the files you mentioned. I cannot however boot up in Safe mode at all or any mode for that matter, so I still have no START menu or control panel to carry out the rest of your instructions. All I get on boot-up attempts is that same message "Cannot start the application as WININET.dll was not found. Installing the appliction may solve the problem " (Even in Safe mode)

Any way around this? Taskmanager seems to be able to run most programs individually, just not the basic pc controls.

Thanks for your help so far..

OK did that (had to copy & paste the unzipped file into system32), & I have some sort of START menu in Safe mode now, but it's useless. As soon as it boots up, I get all my icons back on a black screen, but with the egg-timer as a cursor. (No applications or processes or even activity logged in taskmanager when this happens) Nothing after that.. just freezes up. I've left it for a while and also tried restarting it a few times, everytime the same result. No change to normal mode, still no menus , control panels or icons. Just the Wininet message doesn't come up anymore. Am I doing something wrong?

Just a suggestion, do you have a WinXp cd that you can boot from and do a "Repair".

(I'll deffer to Cookiegal for further directions...)

Hi ucurl,

No, unfortunately I don't. Never gave me one when I bought the sysytem, & I didn't know anything about pc's then (much like now...) to think that I'd need one! Live & learn..

Hi Cookiegal,

Problem has mutated into something very different now.. ( even before I tried that link you sent, which apparently had no effect) I get my icons & START bar up on my (blue) desktop, but it doesn't stay there for longer than about 5 seconds & error message comes up "Explorer has encountered a problem & needs to close, blah blah..." I tried checking the error report, & it now mentions something about TrojanDownloader: Win32/delf.fn I also tried running my useless copy of Norton Antivirus 2004 with it's outdated definitions (although I updated them about a month ago) & it in turn mentioned something about Bloodhound whatever.. Make any sense? Anyway the sysytem is now even more unstable as before, with this Explorer error message popping up every 5- 10 seconds.

I am now searching for a suitable piece of lead piping to put this pc out of its misery!

Use the Killbox on this file:

C:\WINDOWS\q6294156_disk.dll

Download and Save Cleandesktop to your computer from this link: http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/cleandesktop.exe and double click on the cleandesktop.exe

It will automatically extract to c:\desktopclean where it needs to be to run and will automatically run the cleandesktop.vbs script.

If it doesn't open then go to c:\desktopclean and double click on the cleandesktop.vbs Do not run any other file from there please unless asked to.

If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning about a malicious script wanting to run. Please allow this script to run. It is not malicious.

If you get a message when you first run it "Cannot find script file "blah blah blah" then don't worry just double click the cleandesktop.vbs script again as you sometimes get that message when a script blocker blocks the script.

It will then kill Explorer. You will lose your taskbar and desktop. It will repair the registry entries returning your normal desktop and context menu functions.

It will restart Explorer.

Once you have performed the big cleanup, each of the other Users on the System needs to be signed in to clean up their desktop and regain the right click.

Another vbs is included to do this. It is named Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Have each User sign in and run Other Profiles Regfix.vbs.

Open C:\ (Go to Start – Run and type C: Press enter) and Open the c:\desktopclean folder. Double click on Other Profiles Regfix.vbs

Explorer will be ended and that user's active desktop registry entries will be repaired. Explorer will be restarted.

To restore the desktop to whatever picture you normally have right click on a blank part of desktop & select properties/desktop & select your preferred picture press apply & then ok to exit and then press F5.

You will need to do this step for every user account.

Let me know if this helps please.

Hi Cookie, Killbox comes up with "Cannot delete this file", didn't know it could refuse anything like that? Ran the other file (after allowing the script to run like you predicted) but no change in Explorer warning messages. Came up once or twice & back onto blank blue screen now. Stubborn isn't it??

EDIT- Explorer warning is fighting the desktop again every few seconds like before..

Some things have been updated in this fix so let's go through the entire process again.

Click on this link: http://metallica.geekstogo.com/smitfraud.reg and download smitfraudfix.reg file. Save it to your desktop and have it ready to run later. Do not use the one I gave you previously. This is an updated one.

Click here to see how to boot into safe mode as you will need to do this later:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

Go to Start – Control Panel – Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid
PSGuard

Rescan with HijackThis and put a check by these. Close all browser windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked.

C:\Windows\System32\wp.bmp
C:\Windows\System32\perfcii.ini
C:\Windows\System32\oleadm.dll
C:\Windows\System32\helper.exe
C:\Windows\System32\shnlog.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmon.exe
C:\Windows\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\Windows\System32\msole32.exe
C:\Windows\System32\ole32vbs.exe

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

For this particular file, run killbox and paste it into the box, select delete on reboot then press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and then yes to reboot now:

C:\WINDOWS\q6294156_disk.dll
