We have a 160 gb sata samsung hdd and a recently bought 500 gb WD sata hdd. After connecting the new hdd PSU cable with switch(http://pc-level.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/sata-power-cable.jpg) and turning on the pc, smoke appeared from the case. We suddenly turn off the pc and unplugged the hard disks' PSU cables. There is also a smell from the case. when we sniff the hard disks, out new WD 500 gb hdd has a burnt smell.

Our question is that, is there a chance for anything to go bad if we plug ONLY the new hdd and try to turn on the PC? We think the hard disk is dead, but we should try it before going to warranty.

If this is the first time you are using the power adapter cable, you might want to look on line for the pinout diagrams for both connectors and make sure the adapter is wired correctly.
