SoBig Virus Could Strike Again This Week
Infected Computers Could Be Used Again

POSTED: 11:53 a.m. EDT September 8, 2003

Computers infected with the SoBig virus that caused problems last month could spark an another attack on the Internet this week, software experts warn.

Television station WEWS in Cleveland reported that antivirus firm Central Command says the author of the virus could send a command that will cause a flood of spam.

"We believe it could be a spam attack of epic proportions on Sept. 11," said Central Command Vice President Steven Sundermeier, who predicted the worthless e-mail could cripple the World Wide Web.

He posed the threat in military terms.

"You have a general and now you have this huge army. The general controls the army and at the general's command he can instruct those hijacked machines to launch an all-out attack focused on a particular Web site or Internet infrastructure."

"It can just literally clog the system and bring the e-mail infrasturcture down," he said.

WEWS reported that when SoBig.F hit in August, 70 percent of all e-mail worldwide was from the program sending out e-mail with "spoofed" or fake "from" addresses.

Those who didn't use antivirus software to clean their machines could still be infected.

"You can cure your problem today, but you also have to maintain protection for tomorrow's viruses," said Central Command Cheif Executive Officer Keith Peer.

The worm listed itself on comptuers as winppr32.exe, and could be removed using tools availabe online. (See above post for addy to Symantec's site and removal tool.)
