I'm going to be starting a local computer repair service, so I was just wondering what all software I should keep handy. I will be doing virus and spyware removal, hardware repair, computer setup, operating system installation, and other similar things. I would like to use freeware, because I am a high school senior and do not have much money right now. The main thing I need is some sort of hardware diagnostic tool.

Hey, a fellow high school senior. I do local repairs but since I'm not insured and have no certifications, I'm not able to start an "actual" business.

But I always keep the installers for the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Firefox for multiple OS's, CPU-Z, Revo Uninstaller, HiJackThis, SuperAntiSpyware, MalwarebytesAntimalware, Microsoft Security Essentials, Avast!, and whatever else I think might come in handy. Combofix is another good one, but be careful with that. Belarc adviser is another that could come in handy. [Again, I'm talking about just the installers I keep on my flash drive.]

Edit: HDD Health is another handy one.

The handiest tool I have is a PS tester-about $20.00 anywhere. The problem with extensive testing is the cost to the customer. It's often cheaper to re-install the OS, for instance, than to troubleshoot some of the more exotic malware.

I usually carry a Bart PE CD with me and the free tools that Avira offers.
