i need a piece of software to password my files, (easy enough) but I will be uploading these files, so when a user downloads them they will need to enter a password, does anyone know of any such tool? i know winrar can do it but thats not free.

to summerise, i want to password my files so when a user downloads them they need to put the password in to view it, it also needs to work without the user downloading the same program.

I would also like it as freeware.

    thanks

if you are going to upload this files or people are to get the files from you what you can do is setup a ftp server and give the account with the files a password

    http://www.zftpserver.com/

and the users can download a free ftp client software to get the files from you http://filezilla-project.org/

You can put one or more files into a password protected zip file. There are various freeware programs for zipping and unzipping. Windows XP includes the functions built-in.

I'm not sure why it happened, but to fix it go here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, go down to 85 on the right 'Restore Compressed Zipped Folders Association'. Follow the directions at the top of the page.

thanks for that but i'm on windows vista, i have tried some registry edits as found on the internet to which resets the information but its still the same, i also tried re-regitering the service to which has not worked, i had 7-zip installed before so i took that off, restarted and still no good.

    any other ideas?

it won't even allow me to open it, even when i choose use internet to find the program it says

    File Type: Unknown
Description: Windows does not recognize this file type.
