My 1.44 will not ready my floppies. It will boot from my rescue disk, but every time I put a floppy in, it says this disk is not formatted, would you like to format it? I bought a new 1.44, and still the same thing. Could it be my motherboard?

    Hi Chandlerspirits,
    Welcome to TSG.
Have you checked Floppy at Device Mahnager, any flags.
I would try to reload windows driver before I went after M/B.
I'm going to look around, hang out someone will be along with more ideas.
    found this:

    check it out.

Yes, I checked the device manager, says the device is working properly. No flags at all.
How can I reload the windows driver? I went in and updated driver, and it said the best driver was already installed for this device.
    HELP!

Remove it in device manager and reboot, windows should reinstall it.

check the cable make sure it's tight, try another if you have one.

I did remove it and reboot. It comes up OK, but will not read any disks.

I'm going to monitor this thread because I just started having the same problem. I had a floppy get stuck in my floppy drive and had to open up the case, disconnect and remove the drive in order to get the stuck disk out. I reconnected and rebooted and from that time on the drive cannot be read. BUT.....I've check hardware profiles and everything is saying that there are no conflicts, etc. I tried to update drivers, as "Chandler" here also did, to no avail. I'll keep monitoring and hopefully we acn get both our problems solved. Thanks to all who offer help.........

IMHO, check to see how it is set up in your CMOS Setup.

My CMOS says drive A is enabled. What else can I look for?

Chandler, I'm not understanding why the rescue floppy would work and none others....can you read the information from the rescue floppy once you get into windows? Or does it just read when you boot with it?

sdtex, your drive probably isn't level.....test it again by pulling the floppy out of the bay, hook it up outside, and try to access a floppy disk....

Guess what it was. I had installed a zip drive about 6 mo. ago, and everything worked fine. Then I reformatted my hard drive, and windows had my zip and 1.44 sharing the same IRQ. So I removed both devices from the device manager, unhooked the zip drive, and then rebooted. After windows assigned an IRQ to the 1.44, I hooked my zip back up, rebooted, and problem fixed!
