My XP takes approx 10 min to boot from a complete shut down.
Want to stay away from Reg Cleaners, don't trust them.

Any assistance would be great.

Thanks

Hi,
Have you had a look at what's running at start up? Via msconfig in XP.

in addition to what 1002richards said, try defragmenting

and when you check what programs run at startup go to

start > run > type "msconfig" and click ok > click the startup tab and uncheck whatever program paths seem unnecesary, then click the boot tab and see if there is anything you can do there

I had already checked msconfig and have turned off everything but Spy sweeper; Norton's (hate it); Super Anitspyware; Spybot; and my router.

I have also removed unnecessary programs and defragmented the drive more than once.

Still slow at start up. I figure I am still missing something.

You've got too many toolbars. Some of them can be problematic and some of them can contain spyware/adware.

You've got multiple anti-spyware programs which are probably fighting with each other and causing an overall performance slow-down.

You've got too many unnecessary programs running in the background.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.5.0.05 is very out-dated. Version 1.6.0.07 is the current version.

Download and save the current version, uninstall all older versions, delete any leftover folders from C:\Program Files\Java, then install the new version.

updated the Java
Turned off spy sweeper and spybot.
cut some time off, but still slow.

Any suggestions on how to disable the other programs that need not to be running?

1. How long does it take to boot to Safe mode?
2. Once your PC is up and running, are you getting sluggishness running programs or does everything seem responsive?
3. It takes 10 minutes to boot up now. What have you installed/uninstalled/changed since the last time you had a "fast" bootup.
4. How long has this slow bootup been happening? If recent, try System Restore to a point when it was fast.

Anyway, are you sure the registry is clean? I'd recommend running one of the better scanners out there and getting rid of any bad memory references.

Do not use a registry cleaner! It will not improve performance and it will probably prevent some of your programs from working because of the overly-aggressive nature of registry cleaners deleting valid entries along with invalid entries.

------------------------------------------------------------------

If you want research the startup entries and decide which ones to uncheck and disable from running in the background, this site will assist you in doing so.

I went to bare bones and turned everything off under msconfig, started to select one program at a time, then reboot, get an error, select one more and reboot.
It took 2 days of trial and error, but I got the boot time down to 4.5 minutes which I can live with.
thanks for the assistance.

one other app you can use to decrease boot up time is ntregopt. You can get it from majorgeeks.com; it's the only app I use to mess with the registry, as it won't touch any registry keys, instead compresses the registry.

Anything over 4-5% is significant. Post back with what your's was.

thanks,

v

Except for a stand-alone antivirus or security suite program, you'll discover that you can uncheck and disable most of the other programs that run in the background. (y)

this is your second warning on this. On the third, it's a permanent ban. Only those who have been approved by the administrative staff can handle hjt logs. Please refrain from doing so in the future.

Any further infractions can result in permanent banning, as this is not a subject that they take lightly to.

Thanks for understanding,

deleted.....malware assistance
Not one other poster has offered anything conceret to this poster to hwelp him fix his boot problem .
15000 post and only dumb comments !

wasn't telling them to use hijack this ,just mentioning some of its features .its dumb to be able to post a hijackthis log outside the correct forum and then not be able to make a comment on it !!
Using msconfig and then running hijackthis is totally useless as the results in hijackthia will not show what was causing the slowdown on bootup ,because masconfig was already used ,
Edited a post after a moderator has edited it is the same as deleting a moderator's post and has earned you a 48 hour temporary ban.

We have no control over users posting their HijackThis logs in the wrong forum and that doesn't give those who are not qualified free rein to pick at it. Managing startups is one thing but handling malware is another.
