I've had this Vaio Media Center XP for about four months now, and lately it's been abruptly shutting down and restarting without warning or provocation, about once every few days.

It just did it an hour or so ago and when it did come back up there was the popup saying something like "The system has just recovered from a serious something or other; would you like to send an error report, etc." When I sent the report, the MS page that came up said it was related to a driver conflict, but that the cause could not be determined. I haven't installed any new hardware and accompanying driver except a Creative Zen Nano Plus MP3 player. No major video or sound cards, no disc drives, etc.

I'll run a HJT and paste the log below:

Take a look at the Event Viewer to see if anything shows up there . . Right click on My Comuter . . Select Manage . . look for Event Viewer under System Tools

Thanks for the tip, simpswr.

There's a lot of stuff in the Event Viewer I don't understand (read: most of it,) but under the "System" header I found a great big gob of "Warning" entries with the yellow "!" triangle and "cdrom" under the Source column that say, when you click on them:

"An error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during a paging operation."

There are at least 150 of these events in the list, all occurring within a few seconds' period of time. The only other entries I could find that relate to this are three identical entries back on 12-14-05 that have the red "X" beside them, also "cdrom" under Source, that say:

"The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block."

Could it be a glitch in the CDROM drive that's hosing things up?

Other than that there are a few of the red "X" events that talk about the Ntp Client not finding a time source or some cryptic weirdness like that. Some samples of this:

"Time Provider NtpClient: An error occurred during DNS lookup of the manually configured peer 'time.windows.com,0x1'. NtpClient will try the DNS lookup again in 15 minutes. The error was: A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host. (0x80072751)"

"The time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time sources, however none of the sources are currently accessible. No attempt to contact a source will be made for 14 minutes. NtpClient has no source of accurate time."

"Time Provider NtpClient: An error occurred during DNS lookup of the manually configured peer 'time.windows.com,0x1'. NtpClient will try the DNS lookup again in 30 minutes. The error was: A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host. (0x80072751)"

Another yellow "Warning" message I don't quite get:

"Windows saved user (Computer name)\(my name) registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.
This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account."

Other than that nothing looks overtly suspicious, but then I don't really know what I should be looking for.

Intermittant errors are very hard to troubleshoot.

But you want to try to get a "blue screen" STOP message.

Open System Properties (winkey+pause/break) > Advanced > Startup and recovery.

If there is a check in "automatically restart", remove it.

Wait patiently for the blue screen and copy the "bugcheck" data.

You can also find crash dump files in c:\windows\minidump.

I can look at some of these, but you will have to zip them up and upload them as an attachment.

The CdRom0 errors sounds like you had a scratched, dirty or broken disk in the drive at one time that made it unreadable. Typically the program using it just hangs trying to read it.

Sorry for the long delay, but I did get the bluescreen stop message enabled.

There are two different messages I'm getting on these crashes, "BAD_POOL_CALLER" and "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA." The former generally appears on a crash that occurs before a network connection is established, the latter while browsing the 'Net.

The data listed at the bottom of the last two bluescreen messages I got were as follows:

for Bad Pool Caller,

*** STOP: 0X000000C2 (0X00000007, 0x00000CD4, 0X02060006, 0X882199AB)

for Page Fault In Nonpaged Area,

*** STOP: 0X00000050 (0XB3211332, 0X00000008, 0XB3211332, 0X00000000)

There is no driver listed in what you posted but the context suggests a modem or router installation, or possibly a firewall.

You can have a gander at the "C2" and "050" errors covered here:

http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

I can run a debugging utility on the dump files if you do this:

1 > create a new folder on the desktop and call it "dumpcheck" or whatever you like
2 > navigate to c:\windows\minidump and copy the last 2 or 3 minidump files to that folder. They are numbered by date.
3 > close the folder and right click on it and select "Compress to (folder name).zip"
4 > use the "manage attachments" in the "advanced" reply window to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

This might point us to a 3rd party driver causing the error, if one exists for it.
