Don't know about "fav sites," but if you want a shortcut to a site you (when viewing the site) drag the little symbol just to the left of the URL in the Address Bar to the desktop. That works for Firefox and IE, and probably for other browsers.

Are you trying to get the shortcut to display the favicon of the website it goes to instead of the default shortcut icon of the browser (IE, Firefox, etc.)?

You'll need to save the favicon for the site to a folder on your harddrive.
To do that:
Create a new folder (anywhere you can easily find it such as My Documents, root of C:\, etc.) and name it something like Favicons, Icons, etc.
For most web sites you can get the favicon by adding favicon.ico to the base address of the site that ends with .com (or .net or .org) in the address bar.
For example the Tech guy site would be http://forums.techguy.org/favicon.ico
Right click the favicon and if you use Firefox click Save Image As (I can't remember what it is in IE, but it should be similar), then save it to your new Favicon folder you created.

Once you have the favicon, create a shortcut to the site as "TerryNet" said.
Right click the shortcut and click Properties.
Click the Change Icon button on the Properties window.
Browse to the location you saved the favicon to and select it.
OK everything and the shortcut icon should change to the favicon you've selected.

Thanks. It looks like a good "one stop shopping" for favicons.

What went wrong? Could you click the "Change Icon" button and browse to where you saved the favicon?
