So I have a computer that I built recently running XP with 2GB of RAM. If I were to get a 3rd GB of RAM, would I have to reformat my whole computer, or do I just plug it in and it works?

    You won't have to reformat.
You might want to check if your motherboard is dual channel.
If so,and you have the slots, you might want to get 2 512MB
memory boards to keep it in dual channel mode.

    Well I was going to buy a 2 x 1GB and split it with my brother. Would it make a big difference if I had 3 x 1GB, instead of 2 x 1GB and 2 x 512?

It would disable dual channel, but that's usually only around
    a 10% performance difference.

I just bit the bullet and bought two sets of 2X 512MB from Newegg.com. Thanks for you help.
