My husband visits these porn sites and I've tried a couple of spy/adware removers including ad-aware but nothing seems to be working in getting rid of the items in my favourites menu that I don't want (jackpots, gaming sites, porn) etc etc. Deleting them manually will only work until I restart the computer. My homepage is being controlled by these pesky ads too. Is there anything I can do?? I can't let me kids use the computer on their own till I fix these problems.. Help!

    Hi Whuiskas

    Welcome to TSG! :)

Please do this. Go here http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download Hijack This. Un Zip it and click on the Hijackthis.exe.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

Do NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

    Download & Run CWshredder from
    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

and make sure you follow the advice about the security updates listed at the bottom of the page, in order to prevent re-infection, otherwise you will be continually reinfected

    then reboot &
Download Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of
the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.
    then reboot &
    download AdAware 6
Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"
then......click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"
then.........go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"
then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.
When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it.

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

I did everything you said but I couldnt use any of the 3 options on cwshredder for the prevention of re-infection. Not sure why but I cant do the patch thing or remove the whole java thing cos the file 'java.inf' could not be found. Plus, I have this weird 'win min' program thats running secretly and the 'end program' thing comes up whenever i try to shut down windows. I'm not sure if you understand what im saying at all cos im really not good at explaing all this techie stuff.. anyway heres my new hijackthis log file. that 'allneedserach' is still there...my home page and favourties menu is still under hijack :(

Right, I couldnt do the stuff to prevent reinfection, and whenever i run cws again after a reboot the thing im infected with is cws.alfaserch. I think thats the problem. And if I manually remove the things i dont want from my favourites menu (which is useless to do), running CWS puts them right back with that 'restoring IE menus something something' ...

When you run CWShredder, Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Next" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close all windows except HijackThis and "Fix checked"

Restart to safe mode and delete:

    The C:\WINDOWS\system32\msupdate.exe file
    The C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winlogon.exe file

See here for starting to safe mode:
