tried the usual to no avail. (adaware, temp, virus, defrag etc.)

tried to run hjt - received an error message (corrupt) that kept me from copying it to either adobe or notepad. (quite a file though, if only i knew what it meant)

tried to uninstall and reinstall but it still recognizes me and gives me the same error message. is there a way to remove it from my registry so i can copy it to here?

thank you in advance, the whole thing is making me pull my hair out

    hi ya bonk,

it doesn't create a log. i get a message from reader saying it doesn't support the file type or that it's corrupt. hjt just displays within itself what it has.

hjt also keeps telling me that it's in a temp file (it's not) and that i should move it.

no matter how many times (3) i try to uninstall and reinstall it just keeps doing the same thing.

    thanks

although it doesn't appear to be a runtime or .dll error
but now i'm more confused, i d/loaded the runtime files and it asks me where i'd like to place the extracted files????????????

It sounds like you are still trying to run it from within the zipped download. Click the extract all files and then choose a location like c:\hjt. Once it is unzipped there, go to c:\hjt and run hijackthis from within that folder and you should be able to create and save a log to post.

ok, feeling a little stoopid on the unzip part. anyway, unzipped it - installed itself - ran hjt. same message from reader. is there anyway to bypass it from trying to open in reader, and maybe force it to open into notepad?

    thanks for all your help

    Try this

    Step # 1

Rename HijackThis.exe to H.exe. Try a scan. If it works, post the log back here. If not, proceed to the next step.

    Step # 2

Go to this link and download the 1.98 version of HijackThis.exe: On the left-hand side.

i reinstalled reader. now i can't view any log files (irc logs, email etc..)

    does anyone have a suggestion?

also, i forgot to mention - as this machine gets slower and slower, the scroll on my mouse quits working until i reboot again. not sure that means anything to anybody, but there it is.

Try this click Start>>Run type cmd click Ok.

In the Command Prompt type chkdsk /r click Enter

You will be asked if you want a check disk to run on next startup click Y and then press Enter

    Restart your PC
