hey, i have a 5.1 sound card and 5.1 surrond system. my only problem is that on the back of my computer i only have 3 outputs for audio and all that. so i wondered if there is any configuration utility that allows me to designate what ports do what function?
    :)

if you only have 3 outputs, then you do not have a 5.1 sound card
All 5.1 sound cards have 5 outlets & 1 ( or more) inputs

When you plug the speakers into the jacks it should ask you what is connected or automatically set the output to 5.1 audio. If that doesn't work then update or reinstall the Conexant Audio drivers from the Dell website, I would suspect the drivers come with a utility or a jack detection feature: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/inspiron-660

3 jacks is all that's required for 5.1 audio as each jack carries two channels.
