I've got a file that I can't find any information about on the internet, or from looking at the files themselves. It's called baas4vak.exe, it has a dll file, control file, and other files that have numeric values. such as 48798810.txt and some bin files.

I first discovered the file while doing a scan with McAffee's viruscan. I've gone to several sites and even googled the file name and came up dry.

Did I mention that when I try to delete it from the task manager it keeps recreating itself? When I quarantine it, it recreates it.

Does anyone know what this file is?

SpywareBlaster 3.4 http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html
SpyBot V1.4 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
AdAware SE 1.06 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
MS AntiSpy - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...A8BD-DBF62EDA9671&displaylang=en&Hash=RDXMHB6 (XP and W2K only)

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates
and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
In SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Do these and reboot before the next step.

Then get HiJack This V1.99.1 http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe - double click the DL file and click unzip letting it extract to its default folder C:\Program FIles\HiJackThis, run it from there, DO NOT fix anything, post the log here.

The fact that info cannot be found anywhere regarding it, makes it more likely to be malware or a virus.

Do what MFD has instructed. (y)

Aside from McAffee's Viruscan, I do have SpyBot, SpyBot, AdAware, and HiJack This.

I'll run everything again, then post the HiJack log asap. Thanks.

By the way...love the Low Country. I've been to Yemmessee twice in the last few years and hope to go down again in October. Shimpin' off Dawson's Landing was great!

Fix these with HJT – mark them, close IE, click fix checked

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00000000-0000-4304-AFE3-70092645DF83} - C:\Program Files\baas4vak\baas4vak.dll

DL http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab.
Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Now click "Apply to all folders", Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these folders

C:\Program Files\baas4vak

START – RUN – type in %temp% OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete
Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp
Empty the recycle bin
Boot

Run ActiveScan online virus scan

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

I did as instructed, but I might have missed a step. You told me to DL KillBox.xip, but you didn't say what to do with it. Other than that, here is the results of the HiJack This new scan, and the Activescan log.

Sorry meant to cut that out as there were not files to delete but folders

Looks like you missed this entry

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [baas4vak] C:\Program Files\baas4vak\baas4vak.exe

Add remove programs remove newdotnet – if not there http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html

Now u can use killbox

Restart your computer into safe mode now. (Tapping F8 at the first black screen) Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Double-click on Killbox.exe to run it. Now put a tick by Standard File Kill. In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time then click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file. It will ask for confimation to delete the file. Click Yes. Continue with that same procedure until you have copied and pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SHAgentNew.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\hosts.bho
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall6_38.exe
C:\WINDOWS\iHS\setup_17089.exe
C:\WINDOWS\NDNuninstall6_38.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\InstaFinder_inst245.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHAgentNew.dll

Note: It is possible that Killbox will tell you that one or more files do not exist. If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.

Exit the Killbox.

Open Windows Explorer. Go to Tools, Folder Options and click on the View tab.
Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked.
Now click "Apply to all folders", Click "Apply" then "OK"

Delete these folders

C:\PROGRAM FILES\QuickSearch
C:\WINDOWS\iLookup

START – RUN – type in %temp% OK - Edit – Select all – File – Delete
Delete everything in the C:\Windows\Temp folder or C:\WINNT\temp
Empty the recycle bin
Boot

Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
· Install ewido.
· During the installation, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
· Launch ewido
· It will prompt you to update click the OK button and it will go to the main screen
· On the left side of the main screen click update
· Click on Start and let it update.
· DO NOT run a scan yet. You will do that later in safe mode.

Restart your computer into safe mode now. Perform the following steps in safe mode:

Run Ewido:
· Click on scanner
· Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
· During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
· When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
· Save the report to your desktop
This will take some time to run!
Post that log and a new HiJack log

Please give feedback on what worked/didn’t work and the current status of your system

It seems like you had a couple of double entries on the files to delete with KillBox, but I did delete them all. It was a bit challenging at first to run the scan with Ewido because in safe mode it is very hard to read the words in the boxes of options....but I did get it.

Here is that scan log and just after THAT, I performed another HiJack This log...

The system seems to be ok now. However, just after running the scans early this morning, I wanted to send this to you right away, but my cable modem was giving me a flashing "online" light. It seems like after all the hard work, for no apparent reason, my neighborhood decided to lose it's internet connectivity at 1:45am. After finding out from Cox that it was not just me, I decided to send this to you after they could get the internet working again.

Did we get it all this time?
