My system is getting slow and hangs at times, so I thought maybe a clean reinstall of Win 7 will be the way to go.I have an Acronis Free image on a Seagate ext HD, but I found that I cannot restore from that without using a full paid version of Acronis.
Is this correct, I am thinking of making a new image, using Paragon Backup and Recovery 14 Free?
When restoring from an image, do I reinstall Win 7 then use the image to restore all of the programs and files to the new Win7 install.
Can someone please advise me of the correct procedure to follow.

The motherboard in your computer supports up to 8 GB of RAM.

You're running Windows 7 64-bit in it with only 4 GB of RAM, so you should max it out with 8 GB.

Adding more RAM is one of the best and most cost-effective ways to improve speed and "snappiness".

    ----------------------------------------------------------

There may be a number of reasons why it's running slow and hanging, such as:

The processor heatsink cooling unit is clogged with dust.

Too many programs are auto-loading and running in the background.

An infestation of malware, spyware, etc..

A large buildup of temp files.

Thanks frank, I cleaned everything inside case including heatsink cooling unit recently, it was heavily clogged.
I use Malwarebytes every week to check and also use Bitdefender, so I think malware is not a problem.
What is the best way to fix a build up of Temp files/
How do I check for programs running in background?
I will look into increasing Ram.

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Bleeping Computer" button to download and save AdwCleaner.exe to your desktop.

Close all open windows first, then double-click AdwCleaner.exe to load its main window.

Click the "Scan" button, then allow the scanning process to finish.
(Note: Several seconds may pass before the scanning process starts, so be patient.)

Click the "Cleaning" button, then click "OK".

Allow the cleaning process to finish.

When it's finished, click "OK" in each window that appears.

    The computer will restart.

When the log appears during restart, save it.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE log here.

Go here, then click the large blue "Download Now @ Author's Site" button to download and save TFC.exe (Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer) to your desktop.

After it's downloaded and saved, close all open windows.

Double-click it to load its main window.

    Click the "Start" button.

If there are a large number of temp files or if there are multiple user accounts, the temp file deletion process may appear to freeze and may take a few minutes, so don't interfere with or abort it.

After it's finished, restart the computer.

Note: Advise how many temp files in MB's or GB's were found and deleted.

Click Start, then type MSCONFIG in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the small "System Configuration" window appears, click the "Startup" tab.

All entries in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them are auto-loading and running in the background.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, then type SERVICES.MSC in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the "Services" window appears, expand it so you can see the list more clearly.

All entries in the "Name" column that are set on Automatic and Automatic(Delayed Start) are auto-loading and running in the background.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

Some of the startup entries don't need to auto-load and run and can be unchecked.

Some of the service entries don't need to auto-load and run and can be changed to Manual.

If you decide you want to reduce the startup load in your computer, I can give you complete instructions for doing it.

Do the following in the order that they're listed.

Follow the instructions correctly so it gets done right the first time.

If you know how and prefer to submit thumbnail images instead, it'll save you a lot of time.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, then type MSCONFIG in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the small "System Configuration" window appears, click the "Startup" tab.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list.

Make sure to spell them EXACTLY as you see them there.

    --------------------------------------------------------------

Click Start, then type SERVICES.MSC in the search or run box, then press the Enter key.

When the "Services" window appears, expand it so you can see the list more clearly.

Write down ONLY the names in the "Name" column that have their startup type set on Automatic / Automatic(Delayed Start).

If the "Name" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list and in alphabetical order.

Make sure to spell them correctly.

By the way, I've never used a USB external hard drive nor Acronis True Image, so I can't address any issues with them.

The only issue I can address and help you with here is to improve your computer's speed and "snappiness".

Unless you frequently change display settings, you can uncheck these startup entries:

    Intel(R) Common user Interface

    Intel(R) Common User Interface

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

You can change "Startup Type" in these service entries to Manual by double-clicking each one to open its properties window, then changing the setting, then clicking Apply:

    Bing Bar Service

    Distributed Link Tracking Client

    Google Update Service

    Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN 4.0
    (both entries)

    NVIDIA Display Driver Service

    NVIDIA GeForce Experience Service

    NVIDIA Network Service

    NVIDIA Steroscopic 3D Driver Service

    NVIDIA Streamer Service

    Skype Click To Call Updater

    Skype Updater

    Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant

Note: If you have the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, you can also change "Startup Type" in these service entries to Manual:

    MBAM Scheduler

    MBAM Service

After you're all done, close the services window and then restart the computer.

I'll try to help with the Image restore part.

You need to make a recovery CD with the Seagate software first then boot with that to do the restore with the Image on the external drive. The restore puts everything back exactly as it was when you made the Image, you don't need to do anything else.

    Details here :- http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/005924en?language=en_US

Is that computer running any faster and snappier now?

I'll leave you with Allan to deal with the issues that I can't address.

    Thank you Frank.

Just realised you said you used Acronis free to make the Image, was it the Seagate version I linked to in my previous post ?
