Solved: Black screen hang in boot sequence

Hey!
I've recently came across this issue and it proves to be quite annoying.
In the boot sequence, after the "starting windows" screen, Windows will freeze in a black screen as long as 15 seconds before proceeding to the "welcome" screen.
Any ideas you might have could prove useful.
Thanks!

Don't waste your time staring at a blank screen. :) Get a cup of coffee, read a page in a magazine, book or newspaper, do pushups, look out the window or anything else useful that will save you the agony of experiencing non-instantaneous electronic devices. Works for me (most of time).

Something is not right for this to happen. Did it just suddenly start to occur?

Try booting into safe mode and see if it still happens, if not then there may be some problems with drivers that are out of date, or possibly a Malware infection.

If you have other user accounts try logging into one of them and see if the problem is the same. You could also try creating another account, then log in under that and see what happens.

Your System Specs don't show Service Pack 1 as being installed, why is that, have you got Windows Update turned off?

#5 ·
It started happening along with another thing: Windows explorer kept crashing on my user only. I solved this by creating another user, but the problem didn't go away even after deleting the old user completely.

Happens also in safe mode boot.

Logging as another user has no use, since this appears before the user choice prompt.

Service Pack 1 is installed, I made that specs list with another hard drive, on which there were no updates installed, and pasted it here by omission. The antivirus is the same.

Sounds like something is not right in your system. Please follow this guide to post an HJT log, this will give us a closer look at what is in your system.

NOTE. For Windows 7 and Vista you must turn off the User Account Control to allow HJT to run correctly.
For Vista go into Device Manager and type UAC in the search box, open UAC and change the settings. For Windows 7 click on Start and type UAC in the box and hit Enter, then move the slider all the way to the bottom and click on ok.
Download and install HJT
When the TrendMicro HJT install box appears, double click on the HJTInstall.exe. Click on Install.
* It will be installed by default here: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
* A shortcut to the application will also be placed on your Desktop.
* The program will open automatically after installation.
* The folder HijackThis is where you will find the HJT logs that you save.
* The first time you open HijackThis, check the Main Menu button at the bottom center. When the main menu appears check the box "Show this window when I start HijackThis".
* Click on "Do a system scan and save logfile." When the log pops up in Notepad, copy and paste that file back here as a New Message in this forum.
The use of HJT is purely for observation please do not try to fix anything with it or you may damage your system. If I see any suspicious files I will advise you to open a new thread in the Malware forum so an expert can help clean up your PC.

The HJT log does not show anything out of the ordinary.

First run this:

  • Click on Start > type cmd in the search box. A box will open with CMD at the top, right click on it and select Run as Administrator. Another box will open, at the prompt, type chkdsk /f and press enter. (Note the gap between the k and the /)
  • You will then see the following message:
  • chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)
  • Type Y for yes, and press enter. Then reboot the computer into normal mode.
  • chkdsk will start when Windows begins loading again. Let all 5 phases run and don't use or turn off the computer. (The chkdsk process may take an hour or more to finish, if it appears to freeze this is normal so do not interrupt it.)
  • chkdsk finds any corrupted files and fixes them. Read the results of each phase as it finishes. During the final phase, it will notify you if it finds any corrupted files. It will also report on finding any bad sectors on the hard drive, these will be blocked from further use and the data on them moved.
  • When the Disk Check is done, it will finish loading Windows.
Let us know what happens.
If that does not fix the problem run the System File Checker as follows:
Windows 7 System File Checker

If the problem still persists then follow this guide:
Windows 7 Clean Boot Troubleshooting

Windows has finished checking your disk.
Please wait while your computer restarts.

Besides the chkdsk utility, I also ran Windows 7 System File Checker as you suggested. This return no errors.

So, is the problem still the same?

The disk check found quite a few errors and reports 8KB in bad sectors, a fairly good indication that your hard drive is failing.

You can run the manufacturer's diagnostics to confirm this by following this guide, always run the extended test where available as an option.

It would be advisable to back up all your important files before proceeding.

Identify the make of your hard drive and then use one of the links below to get the manufacturer's diagnostics for ISO (CD) not the one for Windows.
When the download is complete right click the file and select Extract Here and burn the image to a CD.
In Windows 7 right click the extracted file, select Open With, then select Windows Disc Image Burning Tool then follow the prompts. For all other versions of windows (if you do not have an ISO burner) download this free software. ImgBurn
Install the program and start the application. Select the top left hand option to burn image file to disk and then on the next window click on the small yellow folder icon and browse to the file you have downloaded from the links below. Then click on the two grey discs with the arrow in between (bottom left) and leave it to complete the operation.
Boot the PC into the Bios setup and set the CD/DVD drive to 1st in the boot sequence. Insert the disk in the drive then reboot and the disc will load into dos.
Excelstore
Hitachi/IBM
Samsung
Seagate, Maxtor & Quantum
Western Digital
Toshiba/Fujitsu
If you have a Toshiba/Fujitsu hard drive I would suggest the use of the diagnostics from the Seagate link as this will work on all makes of drive and on any OS.

Just booted now, and the problem is gone... I guess the Disk Check did the trick.

I went to WD site to download the bootable utility to test my hard drive, and I noticed it has a list of supported operating systems. What's the deal? this is supposed to be bootable.
Can I run it with W7 installed?

The problem will appear to have gone because the disc check will have moved any data away from the bad sectors and marked them not to be used again. Bad sectors are caused by physical wear on the disks surface and further bad sectors are certain to appear, causing more problems.

The Data Lifeguard for DOS (CD) runs from a bootable CD so is not related to your operating system, the supported operating systems list only relates to the "Windows" version of the diagnostics.

OK, I just ran Data Lifeguard's Extended test on my hard drive.
It returned an Error Code 0223, which, according to Western Digital support site means: Errors found, but have been repaired successfully. There were media errors that were within the repair capabilities of diagnostic utility. The drive should now be defect free.
I hope this settles it.

The bad sectors found on the HDD are almost sure to have appeared because of another issue I had and which you also helped me with.

Great news. I didn't recognise your name so was treating this as a seperate thread.

The PSU problem would have been prone to cause data corruption on the drive, which in turn would have caused bad sectors. Usually though, bad sectors are the first sign of a failing drive.

For future reference, when you have a problem that follows on from another it can help to speed up the resolution if you put a link to the previous thread in your opening post, not at the end of it, lol.

Anyway, you should be good to go now, the manufacturer's diagnostics are usually fairly accurate.
