I get the black screen after completely going through the malware removal process. I have a mouse and it moves but the cntl-alt-del solution does not work, safe mode does the same thing as regular mode, etc.

Per my IT boss at work, he said download the Vista iso from the Internet and do a repair because the lady didn't have her disks. This was the ultimate solution that I found in my search.

However, when I do a startup repair and it gives me some sort of error that I have a USB device like a camera or mp3 player hooked up and to remove and reboot. I don't.

I can get to a command prompt and get into the registry. All the fixes that I have read that route hasn't worked. Any help?

What was originally wrong with your computer?

What malware removal process did you go through? Did you have a Malware Removal Expert assist you? Either way, what program(s) did you use?

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

What is the make and model of your PC?

Also, here at TSG we do not suggest downloading .iso's of operating system off the internet from an illegitimate source. Not only is this illegal, but it can be a major security hole. It also leads to the need of activating the OS while you don't have an activation key.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------

Do you have any Vista OS CD/DVDs, Recovery CD/DVDs, or Recovery Partitions that you're aware of?

She has an HP. She probably had the same situation that I had when my hard drive went out on my HP. I had to pay them $40 to ship my recovery discs for my Windows 7 desktop. I know what I am doing 99% of the time. I work on computers with malware about 4 nights a week when I am not at my 40 hr IT position programming.
    There were no recovery partitions.
    There were no restore points.
The iso that I downloaded was perfectly legit and not illegal. I downloaded it for repair purposes only. The key was on her computer.
I have been doing this for 7 years now and never experience the Black Screen of Death.

I simply asked if there was something I was not doing right in the registry that was suggested with a search because none of those worked.

There is no way for me to know the background of those who post here, so I post all relevant information to those who ask for help. Please also note this is a completely volunteer website.

Whether you had originally posted your credentials or not, I still would have posted the same information.

There is no need for you to be hostile towards me after I've offered to help you. If you're not interested in my help, I do not have to give it.

Given your apparent experience, I hope you're able to find the answer you're looking for yourself, or through another user here who has an answer closer to what you were looking for.

In fear of being thrown to the side here, why not just do a CLEAN INSTALL with the ISO file? If you hav a key on the PC then you have no LEGAL issues at bay here.

I apologize, I was having a bad night last night. It stemmed from a bad day at work. I am usually a pleasant guy. I know this is voluntary and I do appreciate it a lot. Normally I go through the whole process of the maleware removal listed on this forum. If I see similar problems as mine, I usually try not to repost the same problems that other people have and just follow the instructions that are given there.

I got her pictures off and I am going to do a clean install.I just had never seen the black screen where it looks like I am in Windows Vista but see nothing but a pointer to move around. Some suggested to do cntrl-alt-del and that seemed to work for about half of the people. Then if that didn't work just try safe mode. If that didn't work then boot to last known good configuration, and if that doesn't work, put in the disc and recover, and of course if that didn't work, try this this or this with the registry, and none of those didn't worked. After a bad day at work and other issues and all of that I got sort of frustrated.

I seriously do apologize to you and did not mean to be rude.

I had a bad day yesterday too, worked from 7:30am to 11:30pm at my full time IT job. Then worked 7 hours today at my part-time weekend job. And still have to stay on top my of malware removal classes. ;)

But in all seriousness, thank you for the apology. Let us know how the clean install turns out.
