Dell Optiplex running XP SP3. On boot just goes to a blank (but glowing) screen after the DELL startup screen.

Can get the boot options screen, but trying to boot into safe move it hangs on SR.SYS

Booted into recovery console and ran chkdsk which reported it had found errors. Did fixmbr and fixboot, but still get the same problem.

    What to do next?

Did you run chkdsk /r - from the recovery console?

SR.SYS - relates to System Restore Filter Driver.
The system restore points may be corrupted.
But if there is a Virus on the system - running Fixmbr - could stop the Pc from booting.

    Try.
    Safe mode with command prompt..
    Log on as administrator.
    Type.
    %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

    This should launch System Restore.
Choose a date prior to the problem.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Yes I ran chkdsk /r

Safe mode with command prompt hangs in the same place.

Can I do a restore from the recovery console?

    Any other suggestions?

You may need to repair the registry.
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

    Or do a repair install.

    XP-Repair install.
Insert the XP cd in the CD ROM Drive then switch on the computer.

You will receive the following message:

This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.
To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.
To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
DO NOT at this point select R.... DO NOT SELECT R

    Select ENTER
    ----------------
On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen
Press F8 to agree to the license agreement

Select current installation of Windows XP.and then

Press R to repair Windows XP.
    -----------------------------------
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to repair Windows.
After you repair Windows , you may have to reactivate your copy of Windows XP
    And install all Windows updates.

A repair install should leave all of your programs and data in place.

Read all info and warnings - as a Repair Install does not always work.

    Thanks for helping.

Ok so now I've done a repair install, but get the same symptoms, except that now when trying safe mode it goes past sr.sys to the next on (dmboot.sys) and hangs on that...

If you have the installation disk I would recommend you to run a 'sfc /scannow' command in the command prompt with the CD inserted into the computer.

How do I run that? I cannot boot into safe mode. THe only command prompt I can get is the recovery console and that says the command is invalid.

I can see sfc.exe in the /windows/system32 directory but don't know how I can run it?

After the repair install all is still the same - normal mode boots to blank screen, safe mode hangs on dmboot.sys (instead or sr.sys)

You may have no other option but to do a clean install of Win Xp.
Are you using Win Home or Professional?

During the install - delete all partitions - create new partition and install all files
    on C: partiton.

Windows Home install guide can be found at the same website.

If you already had a virus on the Pc - running Fixmbr - could stop the Pc from booting.
    Try 247techie's suggestion.

Kaspersky Rescue Disk to Clean Your Infected PC.
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/36403/how-to-use-the-kaspersky-rescue-disk-to-clean-your-infected-pc/

It will create a list of infected files - do not delete any Exe file or anything in a Windows folder.
Make a list of exe files and Windows files before you let Kaspersky remove them - you may need to replace them from the install Cd.

Download - burn to a Cd on a working Pc - start the Pc with the Dvd in the drive.

Fantastic help guys. It now almost works !

Followed the system restore from the recovery console, and it almost boots up, but says it has a problem with the licence , but it will boot into safe mode. Do I just connect to the web and let windows activate?

I will run all those scans once I can get it booted in normal mode
