    Hey everybody!

Can somebody take a look at this Hijack This log? The computer is a Compaq laptop running XP Pro, SP1. The owner let their Norton subscription lapse in November, and the thing has been a nightmare. I uninstalled Norton, put on AVG. I have ran Spybot, Ad-Aware, Ewido, and Spy Sweeper. Sorry, didn't write down what they found...only a couple things. However, when these items were cleaned, I still got a blank page going to Windows Update, and can hit only certain websites. No Google, Yahoo, MSN, Symantec, McAfee...but I could get to Trend Micro. However, their online virus scan wouldn't run. I also just ran CoolWebShredder, and found/removed CWS Smart Web Search. I'm thinking it's a virus, because of the sites it won't let me connect to, but AVG finds nothing. Out of ideas, short of wiping it clean and starting with a fresh install. Thanks!!

    Download the Hoster from here:
    www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip
Run Hoster and press Restore Original Hosts, OK, and Exit Program.

See if you can run this online virus scan:

    Run ActiveScan online virus scan:
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it.
Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
Save the results from the scan and post them here.

Did you do the Beta scan with Ewido rather than downloading the trial version of the program?

Yes I did. I did that after I ran my usual duo of spybot and adaware. Didn't find anything. It was just on a whim that I decided to run CWShredder, and found what I did there. I deal with this stuff a lot, but I've never seen anything as stubborn as what this thing is...or one that whatever it is is so hidden.

I did everything as you said...nothing. Cleanup ran fine, cleared out a lot of temp files. Ran Ewido, it didn't find anything. I didn't go through it line by line (it's late, I'm tired!), but this HJT log looks the same to me. I'm out of ideas. I've checked and rechecked all the java and active x options in IE properties. The only thing that made me think this could be virus/malware related was how I can't get any anti-virus company websites.

I see a worm. Before removing it, I need you to help me verify the full path.

I basically need to know the username on this account.

    It could be something like:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Just thought of something. I did the second HJT scan in safe mode, as administrator. When XP came up, I clicked on administrator instead of the user's account. I'm at work, not at the PC in question at the moment. I'll check on it tonight.

I'm sorry, I guess I'm not following you on the path. The username on the account is the name of the person who owns the computer. Sorry if I sound a little dense, I'm full of SQL Server documentation/crap tonight. I appreciate your help!

Okay well let's try it this way...

    Download KillBox here: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.exe
    Save it to your desktop.
    DO NOT run it yet.

    * When you reach the instructions to use KillBox, where I wrote "insert the username here", you are basically going to type in the username on this account.

    Rescan with Hijack This.
Close all browser windows except Hijack This.
Put a check mark beside these entries and click "Fix Checked".

    O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe

Exit Hijack This and boot into Safe Mode.

    * Double click on Killbox.exe to run it.

Put a tick by Standard File Kill.
In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste each of the following lines one at a time:

    C:\Documents and Settings\insert the username here\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winlogin.exe

Click on the button that has the red circle with the X in the middle after you enter each file.
It will ask for confirmation to delete the file.
    Click Yes.
Continue with that procedure until you have pasted all of these in the "Paste Full Path of File to Delete" box.
Killbox may tell you that one or more files do not exist.
If that happens, just continue on with all the files. Be sure you don't miss any.
Next in Killbox go to Tools > Delete Temp Files
In the window that pops up, put a check by ALL the options there except these three:
    XP Prefetch
    Recent
    History

Now click the Delete Selected Temp Files button.
    Exit the Killbox.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options.
On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files".
Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK.
Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button.
    Click Apply then OK.

    Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot, post a new Hijack This log.

I can't delete winlogin.exe with hijack this. I went ahead and ran kill box as you instructed. It said it cannot find the file. I didn't bother posting a new HJT after reboot, because it's the same...winlogin.exe is still there. There is a running process called winlogin.exe, but I can't kill it. I searched the registry for winlogin.exe, thinking I might have to clean some stuff out, but didn't find anything. I'm about ready to just wipe the thing clean and start over. Yeesh.

    Download WinPFind: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php
Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"
Extract it somewhere you will remember like the Desktop
Dont do anything with it yet.

    Download Track qoo: http://geekstogo.com/downloads/Trackqoo.zip
Save it somewhere you will remember like the desktop.

    Reboot into Safe Mode.
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8.
A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

    Doubleclick WinPFind.exe
    Click "Start Scan"
It will scan the entire System, so please be patient.
    Once the Scan is Complete
    Go to the WinPFind folder
    Locate WinPFind.txt
Place those results in the next post.

    Reboot back to Normal Mode.

    Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note: If your Anti-virus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Window asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, it's harmless.

Wait a few seconds and a Notepad page will pop up.
Copy & Paste those results and paste them in your next post along with the results of WinPFind.

I found winlogin.exe. It was in c:\documents and settings\ALL USERS...I killed it with killbox, and it was not there when I ran HJT again. But, I still have the same issues, so here's the latest...
