I've been getting the message in the title constantly today. A little history. . .

I first got the above error message about a week ago, but it went away after I restarted my computer. Today, it happened when I first logged on this morning, and then again when I logged on for a second time this evening. It pops up all the time, and is becoming very annoying.

I read other people's problems with the above, so I've gone ahead and saved the HijackThis logfile, which I'll paste below. I will also provide info on my computer specs after the logfile.

Regarding the logfile, when I started the scan, there was a message about not being able to access the 'hosts' file. I copied the information about what to do about that, but although I'm using Vista, I couldn't right click on HijackThis and open as admin. I am the admin of my computer, though, so I don't know why I couldn't access the host file. If I need to allow access to host and scan my computer again, please let me know!

    Run HijackThis again.

Select Do a system scan only.

Put a check mark on the following entry:

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~2\GOEC62~1.DLL

    Click Fix checked.

Thanks! I tried doing what you said, but I don't think it worked. I clicked on "Scan" (my version doesn't have a "Do a system scan only" option), then put a checkmark next to 020 and clicked on "Fix checked". After I clicked on it, the contents of the logfile disappeared, so I assumed whatever needed to be fixed was fixed, but no such luck.

Just to be sure, I scanned again, clicked on 020 again (it was still there), then this time I closed everything and restarted. The error is still happening. I scanned again, and saved the logfile which is below. 020 is still there, if that means anything.

Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box.

    Type regedit

    Go to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

In the right-hand pane, look at the AppInit_DLLs value.

    Double-click on it.

    Delete the C:\PROGRA~1\Google\GOOGLE~2\GOEC62~1.DLL part only.

I tried it, and I think it might have worked! I've tried opening a few programs (which would normally be accompanied by the error message), and I did not get any error message at all. I ran another HijackThis scan, and O20 was gone.

As soon as I submit this, I'll restart to see what happens and report back.

I restarted, and nary an error came up! I'm going to wait until tomorrow, though, before I click "mark solved" just in case!

    Thanks for your help!
