I just purchased a HP 2009M monitor and wonder if I could utilize separate speakers instead of the built-in speakers?

Yes; just plug your speakers into the output from your soundcard.

Most certainly... You just do not hookup the audio output from your computer to the monitor audio input. Instead, connect the audio output to the external speakers.
