For the past week or week and a half...I cannot close IE (I am running Vista Home )

When i am thru viewing a page in IE and click the "x" it has the grey pop up windoow with the black bar running across it that has a "close " button...I hit that and it still won't close .. I can't even right click it from the toolbar to close it....I have to go thru Ctrl/Alt/Delete then I have to go to the tak manager EVERY Single tme or shut down completely.

I have noticed that I no longer have my Google Toolbar and I really like that. there is a MSN/Bing search engine on here now and Ii don't remember installilng that...I don't like it... I want my old IE8 with the Google toolbar back.

I did check for windows update and was told there were no updates to install.

Do I need to run a Hijack this? I don't even remember how to do that...and don't remember what I ran it for, but I was told by someone on here at Tech Guys to do it and it cleared whatever my problem was.

Please help..I don't know what to do. and more importantly I don't know how to do it.
Thanks for any help y'all can give me.
    Sherri..

Do you have the same problem if you right click the IE Short cut and run without Add-Ons

For your Google toolbar issue, click Tools > Manage Addons > Search Providers. Enable the one for Google (if it is still there) and disable the one for MSN/Bing.

For the unable to close IE8 issue, click Tools > Manage Addons > Toolbars and Extensions. Disable all of the non-Microsoft addons that have dates since you noticed the problem. If that corrects the problem, try re-enabling them one at a time until the problem comes back. I don't know for sure if addons are the problem but it is a good place to start.

FWIW I had a similar issue when I would click the "X" to close, IE8 would close but it took a good 10-15 seconds. That problem eventually went away by itself.

Do you mean I need to right click on IE (on my desktop) and click that everytime before I open it? I have a Google icon on my desktop and I just double click to open it ...I did try to right click on that Google Icon and there is no choice to run it "without add ons".

Can I open Google and go up to the top and delete the add ons? I never use them...I only use the File/Copy & paste/
There is so much I still don't understand about this computer.

Still won't work for me... I click on the "x" and get the black bar...so, I wait until the other grey box comes up with the "close Program" button...hit that and it still won't close ...it is just an endless loop...I am at my wits end.
    I disabled every add on.

You could post your HijackThis log and see if anything shows up

    Download HijackThis to your desktop
    • Click on Executable
    • Click Run and Install
    • it will launch Hijack This
    • Click on "scan system and save a logfile" usually in notepad
    • Copy and Paste the logfile in your next post
    • Using Ctrl+A to copy All and Ctrl+C to copy and Ctrl+V to paste.

You have way too many programs loading with Windows at Startup.

Press the Windows key + R to open a Run box.

    Type msconfig

    Select the Startup tab.

    Uncheck the following entries:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\hp\support\hpsysdrv.exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KBD] C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\KBD\KbdStub.EXE

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [OsdMaestro] "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\On-Screen OSD Indicator\OSD.exe"

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VolPanel] "C:\Program Files\Creative\Sound Blaster X-Fi\Volume Panel\VolPanlu.exe" /r

There's no difference when running IE8 without the Add-ons, right?

Have you tried clearing Temporary Internet Files, Cookies and History?
    1. Open Internet Explorer 8.
    2. Click Tools > Internet Options > General tab.
    3. Under Browsing History, click Delete...
    Have you tried resetting IE8?
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
    2. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    3. Click the Advanced tab.
    4. Under Reset Internet Explorer Settings, click Reset.

PS...forgot to tell you which one was causing the problem...because after I disabled all of them I went back and was trying them one at a time like you suggested..and the one that was causing the problem ...believe it or not...was, Microsoft "messenger companion helper".
