Each time I try to install new hardware (So far a memory stick, a barcode reader, a new mouse) I end up with the hardware wizard saying it cannot install it. "The data is invalid". Two of the above items are plug and play and the other had a driver which installed ok.

What can be causing this please?

Are you an administrator on that computer?
"The data is invalid." Ummmmm.... What operating system are you using?
Are there any other messages? If so, please post.

If Windows, does it show up in My Computer?
If not check the Disk Management to see if it assigned the memory stick the same drive letter as another drive.
If so, copy your info. to another computer and format it.
What brand of mouse? Is it a El-cheapo, or a good name brand?

I solved it by doing what I should have done in the first place. Searched the forums and found the answer elsewhere! The problem was preventing installation of the mouse, a barcode reader, any new USB item in fact.
