I cannot print any of my excel or word files. I am prompted to save as an xps document. I do this and but still cannot print. Where am i going wrong. I use Vista, if that makes any difference.

Hello, first make sure that the printer is installed and recognized by Vista. You can do that in Control Panel > Printers. Then while you are there right click it, and choose set as default. Hopefully, that'll solve your issue. It should have a green thing with a white check identifying it as default.

Sounds like you have xps writer set as the default printer, open printers and select your actual printer as the default.

I've already tried that but cannot find my printer nor can I add any printers. My printer was installed fine and have printed documents using it. The default seems to have to changed to the XPS document writer and my HP photosmart has disappeared

Unplug the printer USB and reconnect, it should detect it and reinstall the software, if not restart and try again.
