Solved: Canon Scanner "cannot communicate" problem

OK - I have read several other threads that have had similar problems but we have eliminated several areas so far with this problem. We have two Canon printer/scanners - MP830 and MP160 and HP Pavilion using Windows XP Pro and Toshiba Satelite also using Windows XP Pro

The Pavilion uses the MP160 and the Toshiba uses the MP830 but both computers are set to use the other printer/scanner if need be. (The Toshiba usually only uses the MP160 by network but can scan if connected directly and the Pavilion could also use the MP830 if connected directly).

Yesterday we tried to scan from the desktop with the MP160 - the error "Cannot communicate with scanner. Scanner may be turned off, a cable may be disconnected. Please check the status and try again." came up. So we changed printers and plugged in the MP830 - same error message.

Consequently we plugged the laptop into the MP830 and - it scanned.
Eventually uninstalled, reinstalled and cleaned off Canon from the desktop Pavilion and tried to reinstall the MP 160 - or the MP830.
We played this game several times, changed cables, changed hubs, shut down and removed all hub items and connected directly to a different hub to find new hardware, did a registry fix, downloaded a new driver - and the problem still existed.

We have spoken to Canon, several times, who have no answer, as the printers are scanning from one of the computers, just not working with the desktop and we have changed everything possible and tried every angle.

The only thing we can think of (and Canon weren't even sure if this would have occurred) is that the desktop has recently had the SP3 pack downloaded, whilst the laptop has not - is it possible that the USB port addresses may have been modified or changed!

If anyone has an idea as to whether this is possible we would be grateful - so far I haven't seen a solution on the forum that would apply in this case!!!!:(

Ye ha!!! Done it!!!!! For the benefit of all others - just in case this applies to your case - and to save you three days of constant hair pulling, installing, uninstalling, cleaning, restoring and valium sandwiches - we had recently uninstalled a Logitech webcam as it was causing a conflict with one of the other programmes. Reinstalling Logitech - and we are in scan mode again!!! It seems that when Logitech uninstalls it does not do so completely!
If you have not recently uninstalled a web cam or a Logitech item - sorry - don't know the answer.
