I recently defragged my additional hard drive and now when I click on it I get a message saying it isn't formatted. Is there anything I can do to access the drive?

Well, there is not a lot of information to go by but let's see what we can do.

How long has the drive been in the computer?

Was there any information or data on the drive?

What is the make and model number of the computer?

What is the processor and speed of the computer?

How large is the hard drive?

What defraging program did you use?

What version of Windows are you using?

It's a 80GB hard drive and I think it's been in for about a year. The drive was 84% full with video. The computer was built in 2003 by a Vancouver computer company. It has an AMD Athlon XP 2.5G processor. I used the Windows XP defrag program.

You may have experienced a hard drive failure, but let's try this first.

In the Run box type CMD and press OK that will take you to a black window with a flashing cursor

    Type chkdsk X: /R

X = being the drive letter of the drive to be checked which is the drive in question

Press enter to start and let us know what happens

This is what happened and it seems to have frozen on Stage 4. It hasn't gone any further for the last 15 minutes. Should I leave it for longer?

You have a problem and it is a bum hard drive. I really do not think there is anyway to get the info back at least thru here. Any data recovery would have to be done thru a data recovery service and they are big bucks cost. I do not know if I would trust this drive even after re-formating it. I do apologize but that is just my opinion from many hard drives.
