    Can't boot into WinXP

    Safe Mode gives me this:

    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
    " " " " \hal.dll
    " " " " " " \kdcdrom.dll

    Merry Christmas!

I think you're going to need your XP CD to boot the machine and go all the way past the first Repair option. Proceed as though you are instlaling afresh and when you're offered the second chance to repair, accept that and it will reinstall without destroying your personal files and installed programmes - mostly.

It has to be the same version (Home, Pro, MCE, or Tablet) and type (OEM or Retail) or it won't accept your product key.

This is debateable. In my view, in theory even though the MCE installations isn't working for you, W7 should be able to see it and identify it as an upgradeable product - asuming it is one. Read the small print carefully on a the W7 terms and conditions - there seem to be several exceptions to several more rules particularly over OEMs.

You would need both MCE CDs to carry out the work on the existing installation.

I'm leaning towards Win 7 since I can't find the MCE. I'll read the fine print and see if it's do-able.

    Thanks for your help.

One last shot - can you get into Safe Mode with Command Prompt?

Nope. That's when the 3 "multi(0)disk(0) blah-blah-blah" (n) messages appear but no command prompt

    Ok.

I bought a program called System Suite 11 and it got me up and running. Slow, but able to boot into windows and get on the net. Evidently there was a trojan virus my anti-virus software didn't catch.
I'm doing a scan now and will send a hijack this file as soon as it's done.

Thanks you guys. What you do is amazing!(y)

According to reports on System Suite 11, it is a useful tool but it does have a drawback if you choose to use the "Optional Features" that it offers. Those can slow down your system quite a bit. Try disabling those features and se if your system speed is restored to normal.

ps. I don't normally recommend any "fix it" programs or Registry cleaners but I can't dispute your success.

    Good luck.

I uninstalled the whole program. Seems like a lotta crap to me. A "virtual memory is low" kept popping up but seems to be ok since removing it.
