    Epilogue
I've downloaded Bluestacks to sync my android apps with my pc and it worked just fine. Shortly after I've gotten a request from Microsoft to run some updates which I've accepted. I left my workstation and when I came back 2/3 of my desktop icons had vanished and there were about 30 application error windows on my screen. The pc was blocked and only CTRL+alt+del worked, so I've shut down the pc. Since then nothing worked. I can't boot Windows 7, can't start safemode.
The only thing that works is F2 (Setup) and F12 (boot options), but I don't get far there.

    Remedies
I've tried the following without success:
    1) Rebooted W7 from the CD, ran the repair option out of which system image won't work and although I see system restore points (I have bi-monthly points), I get an error abort message. So no luck there

    2) I've downloaded the Ubuntu 12.04 ISO on a UBS flashdrive and at least succeeded to get the initial Ubuntu screen but couldn't install (subinstall it under Windows 7 was suggested) and thus had no chance in recovering my files/docus/media. The computer goes back to the black screen with the blinking unusable cursor.

    3) I've tried to follow the suggestion from your Tech JSntgRvr by downloading the "Farbar Recovery" program and execute it in the Window command prompt, but I get an error message that states:
x:\sources>i:\frst.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

(with "i" being the drive where the usb flash was)

So now I am out of my "very limited" wits. And I appreciate any guidance from the pros. Thank you!

You should be able to boot Ubuntu LiveCD and mount the Windows hard drive, then copy off your important files from the hard drive to a USB memory stick.

Go here to download Ubuntu 10.04 ( There is a newer version, but I am going by my existing setup, so follow along and choose 10.04 ) http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/ Save the iso file.

Then download ImgBurn from here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

    Install ImgBurn and run it.

    Choose "Write Image to Disc"

At the top of the Imgburn window, where it says "Source" click on the folder with maginfying glass icon; Then navigate to where you saved the ISO file.

Then click on the bottom area of the window depicting hd write to CD.

    That should create the CD.

Now you want to boot with the CD on your PC. Check your BIOS so that it chooses to boot using the CD first. You are looking for the Boot menu, boot priority, or something along that line.

Once you boot into Ubuntu, pull down the Places pull down menu. Choose the ## GB Filesystem. That would be your hard drive. You will be able to see all folders in your drive. Now copy off the files you want to a USB memory stick.

Thank you lunarlander, I've tried the Ubuntu version 10.04 and it worked (compared to the 12.04), so I could in fact retrieve my files. I even can use Internet on that system again!
The next step would be to re-install the windows 7 software (have not done that yet). I've tried an OTC system repair solution (no, I didn't work:) which spit out that
    a) No errors were found in partition table
    b) Master boot record appears to be corrupted

I now can boot Win7 and get a black screen with some icons (no internet access tough). As soon as the black screen appears the following error message windows appear:
    1) mfpmvate64.dll (this in connection with a Run.dll error message)
    2) error 0x8000ffff
    3) Write Fault Error (that window appears about 30 times)
    4) attrib.exe - Application Error 0xc0000142

I've also tried to run a Reg Utility Scan, but had to abort after it hang itself up....
Any suggestions on how to proceed? I appreciate your help.

Hi there, I have had some previous experience with win7 not booting up. Have you tried running a Hard drive diagnostic test? If you can boot your computer up and go to computer, go to the tool tab. Then click Check Now by Error-Checking.

I have had previous systems that refuse to boot up for one reason or another, either by continous looping boot up sequence, or faulty registry keys. This error disk checking will fix any of these issues.

As you said you cannot run win7, so perhaps use another OS to do this check. It may not solve the problem as a whole, but you may stand a better chance booting up win7.

    Hope this helps.

I still get the following error messages after booting Windows 7 (plus black screen, plus some icons, but no access to "My documents"). I could reconnect to Explorer and was able to run Hijackthis (see log below).

Here are the error messages that appear after rebooting:

    1) RUN.DLL error > mfpmvate64.dll
    2) error 0x8000ffff
    3) Write Fault Error (that window appears about 30 times)

In the meantime I was able to run a HIJACKthis, this is my log

This entry shows the file causing the error, a Google search for either the short name or the .dll file name has no results other than this thread so it is highly likely the file is an infection, at the very least it is highly suspicious.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [pcaueown] rundll32 "C:\Users\Delia\AppData\Local\Temp\mfpmvate64.dll",CreateProcessNotify

I would suggest you open a new thread in the Malware forum where I can help check that file and remove it if it is found to be bad.

Yes Mark1956, it is in fact an infection pretending (Smart HDD) and it appears, that it let me believe that my hard drive is corrupted and all my files gone (when in reality hidden). So after a lot of screaming and sweating I did the following:
    1) I've downloaded and run RKill (which ends the program Smart HDD from running)
    2) I've downloaded and run TDSS (to check if it's a bundle infection)
    3) I've downloaded and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which hopefully deleted that nasty thing (PUM.Hijack.Trojan.RedivRdll.4)
    4) I've downloaded unhide.exe and restored the background (Window&)
    5) I run my Registry Booster....

So let's hope that's it. I will post the new Hijack in the Malware forum hoping everything looks good now. Thanks

Sounds like you are on the right track.

When you post in the Malware forum put the link to it in your next post here so I can pick it up. We can then run some more checks and make sure the Rogue program has completely gone and everything else is back to normal.
