I'm having trouble removing ISTSVC.EXE. Ad-Aware couldn't remove it. I uncheck it in my start up menu, but it reappears. I kill the process so try to delete the folder containing the evil files, but the process restarts itself.

I'm also having trouble removing Java/ByteVerify. AVG antivirus detects it but doesn't seem to be able to get rid of it.

I'm running Windows XP. SP2 is not installed.

    Java Byte

    # Click Start | Settings | Control Panel
    # Click the Java Plugin Icon
    # Click the Cache tab
    # Click the Clear button and click OK to confirm
    # Note: Please repeat this procedure for each "Java Plugin" button in your Control Panel

Then get HiJack This http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html, put
it in a permanent folder (C:\HJT) , run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the
    log here.

You have both Norton and AVG running, one of them needs to go, it is not good to have 2 AV’s running

Download but don’t run CWShredder http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
    download http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/DelDomains.inf

Print this and boot to safe mode

Open cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" and let it run.

Right click the DelDomains.inf file and click Install, making sure Internet Explorer is closed. You won't see anything happen. Give it a minute

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

    Fix these with HJT

thank you for those clear and detailed instructions.

one problem. you're telling me to get rid of Optimum Online, which is my ISP! Is that a mistake? For someone who had never heard of Optimum Online, I could see them mistaking the name for some sort of bogus "enhancement" program. Maybe y'all never heard of Optimum Online down in fine S.C.

once i hear back from you on this, i'll run through your instructions--although probably not till tomorrow.

    thanks again.

Thank you again for your help so far. Unfortunately I had some comparatively worse non-computer problems to deal with in the last two weeks. But you'll be happy to know that I've sorted things out AND I've finally run through the procedure you outlilned for me.

Note that not all the HJT entries were still there. Also, some of the files you told me to delete were not there--I looked very closely.
IN ANY CASE, Here's the new log.

Things seem much better. I'm getting no more virus warnings. Also, before, my homepage would be repeatedly reset; now it's "staying put." And no pop ups so far.

Re: The one more item that I need "get" using HJT: Is it important that I do that while in Safe Mode?
