I have a Gateway Z06 laptop with Windows 7. It got some sort of virus that I couldn't remove no matter what I did. I had no other option but to reset the laptop, but when I started the Windows Boot Manager I got messages saying the following programs were corrupted:

    winload.exe 0xc0000428
    memtest.exe 0xc000000f

I've seen comments saying that I need to insert the Windows 7 CD, but my laptop came with the OS already installed. What can I do?

This problem occurred after you did a "recover or restore to factory defaults" using the Recovery partition?

I would try the Recovery again. If the same thing happens maybe the Recovery partition is corrupted and the next step would be to try using your set of Recovery DVDs or CDs if you created one.

Windows won't even start now. When I turn on the laptop it directly goes to the (failed) boot manager.

Can you boot to the Recovery partition? If not, do you have and can you boot to your Recovery DVDs/CDs?

I tried putting in the Windows 7 installation disk but it stayed the same.

With the optical drive before the hard drive in the boot order? Do you get the "press any key to boot from CD"?

Not at all. I just get the 0xc0000428 error message, and when I press ESC, it takes me back to the message rather than to the desktop

Is there any way you could plug the HDD into another computer via an external usb, and: ether try to run virus removal again, or just wipe it?

Huh? You get this when trying to boot from the Windows 7 Installation DVD? Are you sure that it is trying to boot from the DVD and not the hard drive? If so try booting from the Installation DVD on another computer to see if the DVD is OK.

Fixed. Made a Recovery CD and used the CD drive from the F2 menu. Thanks.
