I have a really big question, our cat has once again gotten her claws stuck in our case. We have this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021.

She's gotten them stuck both in the front holes and side ones. Is there anything I can put over those fan covers that will prevent her from doing it? I'm not worried about the top one as it has much larger holes in comparison to the front and side ones. I've thought about possibly cutting up a window screen? Or, I know this one will sound weird but panty hose? Since it's thin..

I'm worried that she'll do this when we're not here and possibly rip a claw out. And getting her declawed is out of the question.

    Thank you for your help.

(also, I know this probably isn't your typical post, but I'm not sure who else to ask, sorry.)

Putting something over the ventilation holes will likely cause overheating issues. And if the material is too thin in order to prevent overheating, the cat's claws would go through it anyway.

Any way you can move the case to a place the cat usually doesn't go?

my cat would go absolutely bonkers if I tried that, and I'd come out the other end looking like I shaved with a blender.........:)

I will state, however, that I've never heard of this issue before. I dunno if there is some paste or a compound that won't affect the case, but causes cats to dislike the smell.........maybe, I dunno.......but again, I've never heard of this, so I'm sort of looking forward to the resolution..........

no clue......best I've got is some sort of something that smells bad to cats, doesn't harm the rig, and doesn't annoy the humans.......but I've NEVER heard of this.......tempted to ask the OP if the cat is A+ certed.......:)

Never heard of this one before however how about some wire cloth. This is about 51% open and would be stronger than window screen. This stuff is available at almost any industrial supply store.

    would that effect the cooling?

@bicycle bill: Ah, I don't think those would work since they would just make it so they are stuck worse. Since they are rubber-ish they'd probably just conform? to the holes. And I don't think she's stand them being on her feet.

@TheShooter93: We've been trying to think of somewhere but the only place where it's not closed in is where it's at, there's not much room on the table with the monitor, I was thinking of maybe making or buying a loosely inclosed stand maybe? I'll have to look into that.

@valis: I don't know, we have some spray that is supposed to deter them from things and I've sprayed it around the case but it doesn't seem to work.

@crjdriver: That possibly might work. But would it effect the fans from cooling properly?

It may or may not. It is supposed to be 51% open. The only way you are going to know is to give it a try. I would use 4 small tie wraps to secure it to whatever vent/openings you want. Run something to stress the system ie prime95, occt, etc and check your temps.

That must be one really dumb cat.

Maybe fence the case in using hardware cloth? That's a nice open mesh. It'd look pretty ugly, but it would surely keep the cat away.

What is inside the case that attracts the cat?

She isn't dumb, a bit too curious for own good, but since she isn't doing this on purpose that doesn't matter.. I don't honestly care if it looks ugly, it doesn't have to impress anyone, I'm worried about her claws more than I am about a stupid computer.

And inside, the fans? All the hardware? But she isn't after what's inside. She goes to stretch and the holes catch her claws.

Sounds like she needs a scratching post.

We have one. She won't use it, wants nothing to do with it. I keep her claws trimmed if that's why you suggested. The vet clips them once a month.

well, like the tree said to the lumberjack, I'm stumped. I'm still leaning towards something on the case to dissuade her, though....but something that won't hurt the pc or the user.......

have you tried the water spray approach? May not be the best around a pc, but well-aimed, one never knows. Taught my cat to stay off the couch with that one.

For an EXTREME approach, you can try http://www.plasma2002.com/blenderdefender .....sorry, but every time I see that I laugh my patoot off. The funny thing is that the calico kitty keeps getting up there.......
