I recently purchased a CDRW where I had remove the current CDROM as I did not have any space for the writer. I am now trying to install my daughters MPS software (Rio) but the everytime I put the installation CD in the system would freeze.

Does anyone have any idea why this may be occurring, a friend suggested that maybe the burner I brought was only for CD-R & CD-RW but the product also came with CD-ROM.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thank you
    Taza:(

First off, the suggestion to post details was right on-target, it makes it a lot easier to analyze the problem.

I'll make one comment anyway, I've never heard of a CD-R/RW drive that didn't also read CD-ROMs, and I seriously doubt one exists. FWIW, I've assembled 100's of systems, and when replacing a CD with a CD-RW drive, all that happens is you take one out, and put the other one in, and you should be reading CD's. To burn CD's, you obviously need to install the burning software, unless this is an XP system, which comes with a primitive CD-RW capability.

Have you successfully read any CD media in the drive? If not, did you look in device manager and see if there are any errors for the CD drive?

Thank you PaulV & johnwill, yes I agree more information would be most helpful:

    OS: Windows 98
    Software in question: Cyber Drive CD-Rewriter (CD-R 48x, CD-RW 16x, CD-Rom 48x)
    RAM: 64.0mb

Currently we are able to play audio but the installation disk would be the first media disk that we have tried and does not appear to be working.
I apologise for the lack of information but I am not up to play within the computer world like you are and any further assistance is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you
    Taza:D

How about looking in Device Manager and telling us what you see for the CD drive?

The Device Manager has the following:

    - CDROM
    CyberDrv CW088D CD-R/RW
    NERO IMAGEDRIVE 2

This is the information that is currently showing, I hope this is a little bit more helpful.

    Thank you johnwill

Check the properties of the CD in Device Manager, and if DMA is checked, uncheck it. Let us know if that helps.

I read that Johnwill suggested unchecking DMA in CD RW drive properties. I am having a problem trying to burn/copy CD's in my Iomega CD Burn-R model CRW1208A. Running Windows 98 SE, E machine Etower 500is, 184mb memory, 5gb hard drive. It used to work, but seems to have flawed since I played around with Media Player 9 and added Roxio CD burning engine to it. I uninstalled MP 9, but can't get Windows Add/Remove to get rid of Roxio. Every time I try to reload the CD Creator 4.02e software, it says that it installs successfuly, but get an error when I try to copy a CD. Here's the error message and thanks if you can help:
