it is not turning on since te socket for charger is broken and its one of those
laptops where it cant run on battery alone.
any solutions short of taking it in and paying money?
i have some spare desktop computer case could i use those?
if i could what equipment and how would i do it?

If the laptop's charging socket is broken, you're not going to be able to charge the battery or provide power to the laptop.

Without any power to the laptop, it isn't going to start up and run.

Having a computer shop replace the charging socket may cost more than what the laptop is worth.

I recall a family member of mine having to pay about $150.00 for that type of repair.

There's no parts from a desktop you could use to make it work. There is one solution, fix the jack.

Just to echo Frank and Rob, you need to replace the socket where the charger connects.

Unless you know someone that will do it for free, it is going to cost money.
