so i'm planning on upgrading my dads computer which is an Acer Aspire 5517 it is still all default hardware. it has the dual core processor and windows home premium. i want to buy a new processor for it and i found a site that had a list of compatible parts and this was the best one listed but this one is better and it appears to be compatible but it wasn't on the list of compatible or incompatible parts. i want to know if the better chip is compatible or if i should stick with the first one.

    thanks

not sure how easy it will be to upgrade a laptop - can be quite difficult to do

why do you want to upgrade - are you sure you have a CPU performance issue

and what else are you planning on upgrading

run this program and post the results

    nothing in it
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

    AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-68 1242 735
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core TK-42 897 866

the processor you have TK-42 has a higher pass mark - so i suspect may perform better

you need to understand what the limits are before wasting money on upgrades - that may not help

    as i said before

Laptops aren't designed to have their processors upgraded. The motherboards are proprietary. You can't draw definitive conclusions based on generic chipset information. Any upgrade, if it actually works, will generate more heat and cause other problems.
