I've been having problems with my computer lately. Within the last week it starting freezing up and then I couldn't shut it down using the Start > Turn Off Computer so I had to force the shut down by holding the power button. This weekend it was freezing a lot and even one time while I was in the middle of something it suddenly just restarted itself. Last night it got so bad I could only do about one task at a time and it would just freeze up if I tried to do anything else. I ran my Malware Antimalwarebytes software and it didn't find anything. Was going to run my Microsoft Security Essentials scan but I couldn't because it just kept freezing up on me so I shut everything down overnight. This morning so far it seems to be doing just fine, although when I first turned it on it sounded like the fan was making a really loud vibrating noise. So not sure if I'm having a hardware problem or it's something else. Any suggestions?

    Download and install HijackThis.

Click "Scan" and then "Save Log." Do NOT click "Fix Checked" or anything other than "Save Log."

Copy and paste the log you saved into your next post.

    Click Start.

In the search bar type msconfig and hit Enter.

    Click Startup(tab).

Remove tick marks from all of the following except:
    • Microsoft Security Client
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't see an antivirus program on your computer. Do you have one? Does it launch at startup?

If you don't have one, download and install Microsoft Security Essentials then reboot the machine.

    Ok I did that.

I do have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and yes it starts when I start my computer. It's got the little green tent looking icon down in the lower right corner.

Well so far today it's been fine. Do you think I just had too much running at startup? But shouldn't I keep my Malware Anti-malwarebytes program running along with Online Armor and MS Security Essentials? Those ones should be running all the time right?

You want to have a maximum of 1 antivirus program and 1 firewall program running at a time.

Since you're running MSE and OA, you're at your max.

If you're satisfied, you can mark this thread as solved by clicking the "Mark Solved" button in the top-left corner of the thread.

Ok...well the reason I had all 3 was because another time I had a problem with my computer the guy that helped me had me install all 3 of those. Does the Malware and MSE do the same thing?

Plus I've had all 3 of them running on my computer for the last year at least and haven't had any problems until just this past week. But if you think that just the OA and MSE are sufficient to protecting my computer....

Yes, you only want to run Microsoft Security Essentials and Online Armor.

If you have MBAM Pro in there as well, it acts as a second antivirus which slows down your computer considerably as well as create holes in security.

Ok. So should I just uninstall MBAM pro then if not needed? Guess I didn't need to purchase it then.

No, it wasn't necessary that you purchase it. I'm not sure how their subscription service works, but if it auto-renews, you should make sure to cancel it.

If you like, you can uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials for now and keep MBAM pro. It's up to you, you just shouldn't run both simultaneously.

I see. Well it wasn't too much. Just like $25 I think. I don't think it auto-renews. Are they equal as far as which one works better? Would you recommend MSE? I think I may just keep MSE and OA. I have noticed that when I try to do things with the other one it goes pretty slow, like updates and even just opening it.

I've never used MBAM Pro so I can't speak for it's reliability, though I'm sure it's a good program.

As for MSE, I use it on all my machines and install it on all the machines I work on. It's my #1 recommended antivirus.
