Hello,

My current video card is an ATI Radeon 4200 Series Integrated Chipset. I have never had any issues with it until yesterday, when Steam offered to handle all of my video card driver updates automatically. I was hesitent, but figured that it would be one less thing to worry about. Boy, was I wrong.

After installing what it said were the latest drivers for my video card, the resolution immediately became very low and I noticed that I had lost my ATI Catalyst program to manage all of my graphics settings. I was unable to set the resolution back to the way it was because the resolution menu options were different and anytime I went too high the monitor would say that the input signal was out of range. The updated drivers also replaced my ATI Catalyst program with a seperate program called AMD Graphics Engine. It does not work and shortly after loading Windows, my computer gives me an error message stating that there are is no recognized AMD Video Card.

When running Windows in normal mode, everything takes an eternity to load, oftenitimes timing out alltogether forcing me to do a hard shut down of my PC. After doing a hard shut down, I've had to run Chkdsk to check for errors and now system restore can not retrieve any prior restore points.

I've tried everything from uninstalling reinstalling all of the drivers from the Device Manager to manually attempting to install the drivers from the AMD website while in safe mode. When I run it in normal mode, Windows fails to find the appropriate drivers for new hardware, with the auto installation process failing after searching Windows Updates. Everytime I run the driver installation program from AMD, it gives me an error message saying that it "Failed to Load the Detection Driver". It does this regardless of whether I choose the latest or any of the previous versions of the Radeon 4200 drivers.

Other forums have suggested that I try running the Micrsoft Virtual C++ redistribution program but I am unable to do so while in safe mode. I've also tried to disable the Display Device (ATI Radeon 4200) and run the AMD Driver installation program in normal mode to no avail.

The funny thing is, I was already contemplating upgrading my Graphics Card and PSU before this all occured to a 600W PSU with a 6770 or 6790 graphics card. I am afraid now, though, that there are other issues that are causing my computer to run in such an unworkable fashion.

I obviously have some driver issues going on here. Hopefully nothing else. Would upgrading the graphics card and PSU solve these issues as I was planning on doing anyway? Also, how should I go about fixing the current issue if I need to do so before upgrading the graphics card?

Any and all of your help will be much appreciated.

Why not try system restore and restore your system to before the update took place.

Hi and welcome to TSG.

I have been using Steam for a long time and have never known it to attempt to update drivers before, thats an interesting one.

What is the exact make and model of the PC, assuming its a 'big brand' name like HP, Dell, Acer, Gateway etc?

If you can get into Safe Mode OK, then try giong through the Control Panel > Programs and Settings and uninstall any ATI drivers you have. If you know exactly which AMD drivers it installed uninstall those aswell.

Personally, I don't let Windows or any other program update drivers for me, especially graphics drivers as they quite often get them wrong or aren't fully up to date. The first place to get drivers from are from the PC Manufacturers website, then after that the GPU manufacturers website.

Can you run a dxdiag in safe mode. Click Start and type "dxdiag" (without the quotes) in the Run box then hit Enter.
The DXDiag window will open, on the bottom right of that window you should see a button called 'Save All Information', click that button and save the .txt file to your desktop, or other location as long as you know where it is. When you have done that copy the entire contents of that file into a reply here so we can have a look at it.

I can't run System Restore. It fails to retrieve any restore point most likely because I've had to run Chkdsk since I've had this issue.

I also was very weary of having Steam update my video card drivers. Now I am regretting that I allowed them to do so.

I am at work and not on my home PC at this time, but when I get home from work later this afternoon, I will post the dxdiag report.

My make and model is an HP Pavillion 6710, Windows 7 (64 bit), ATI Radeon 4200 Integrated Chipset, AMD Athlon Quad Core Processor, 4 GB RAM.

Thanks for your help thus far.

I actually doubt that Steam had anything to do with it. The ads are getting more and more clever and sometimes appear to be from the sites they are on.

Did this card come with the machine? If it did, you should use drivers from the computer manufacturer.

Did you remove all ATI software using the ATI cleaner in Programs & Features?

(Chkdsk would not have any affect on System Restore points. If you have the DVD, try running System Restore from that, or picking another point.)

I used Driver Sweeper to remove all of the AMD Drivers. Upon restart in Safe Mode, it stated that Windows automatically installed a newly found video device. It is listed in the Device Manager under the Display tab as "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter".

Where do I go from here?

First of all, hp lists 5 different systems under that model #. Make sure of the exact system you have and what suffix is used on the model # ie AX, TX, etc.

Once you find the correct model #, go to the hp site and download the chipset or mb drivers and video driver. Install the chipset driver first and reboot; now install the video driver.

cjdriver kind of beat me to it, but when the standard VGA driver is used, it is because the OS can't identify what card you have. That is usually because the chipset drivers are missing. I was just coming back here because I thought that maybe the driver sweeper deleted too much and that other devices might be missing, too. But I see someone else had the idea sooner. :D

Yes. Download that and the video driver. Install the chipset driver and reboot. Now install the video driver.

Note before doing anything I would highly advise you to make a current backup of anything important ie docs, mp3s, etc.

The issue that I am having is that whenever I attempt to download the chipset drivers from the AMD website, it fails to complete the installation process shortly after it begins giving me that same error message - "Failed to load detection driver". The AMD Catalyst installation program basically freezes up after that. I can't seem to find the chipset drivers anywhere else except the AMD website.

In my Device Manager, it has the AMD RAID device listed under Storage Controllers, but the Display Adapters still only has Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

I remember what my set up looked like before, and it had RS880 listed in the Display Adapters as well as Radeon 4200. The HP factory drivers under the exact model name have the graphics drivers listed as RS880 and Radeon 3000 Integrated graphics for some reason. You can see it when you go to the link and I'm positive that my PC is a HP Pavillion p6510y.

Basically, you are right in that my PC is not finding my chipset. Even when I run CPUX which tells me all of the PC's specs, it has no chipset. It used to be Foxconn RS880. When I attempt to get the drivers from the AMD website, it fails every time giving me that dreaded "Failed to load detection driver" error.

The chipset has nothing to do with the display. It has to do with your main board, so it will come from the HP site. You can't install the graphics until all the motheboard resources are installed first.

Do you know what board you have?

You can get more info using PCWizard
.

Take a look in Device Manager. What devices there need drivers? Look under the "Other" section there, too.

You should start by using the graphics driver from HP. Once you get that working, then think about updating.

RAID has nothing to do with graphics, either. That is the driver for a RAID array of hard drives which I don't believe that you even have.

I found the chipset drivers, but I need to know what board you have and what socket for the CPU.

Without knowing any more, I'd suggest that you try this chipset driver.
