Ok I have a gateway running windows xp. I had a virus and ran mcafee. It told me to reboot so I did and now nothing happens. hte gateway screen comes up and nothing after that it just stays on the gateway screen. I can't enter safe mode and it will not read my recovery disk. I called gateway and they told me that because my computer is out of the warranty, they would be happy to help me and then gave me three payment options. I have come to grips that I will need to format the hard drive, but I just don't know how to get it to that point. the only thing that happens is the gateway screen and the fan runs really loud. pleae help!!!!!

First, can you access the BIOS? If so, set the boot sequence with the CD\ROM as first boot device. Exit the BIOS and try booting from the recovery CD again.

There are lots of things that'LL cause a system to freeze on boot up. anywhere from RAM to PSU. Check your fans on the CPU and PSU. How many stick of RAM do you have? If you have more then one test them one at a time in slot-one and boot the system.

ok I entered the setup mode by pressing delete key durring reboot. it says that it is staring up but still freezes in this mode also. can't go anyfurther. I really don't think its a problem with ram. I had a virus and computer was acting nuts before. i ran the scan and after rebooting thats when it froze

Well after several hours and several beers and forcing myself not to blow the thing up, I unplugged all of the usb connections (printer and game controller) I rebooted and it started right up. Virus gone no problems what so ever.
