I am running windows xp - sp2. For the last few days, I was getting continuous blue screens whenever I booted up my laptop with the following message:

ar5211.sys tried to write to read-only memory space......

This kept on happening a lot, so I found out that this may have been caused by an Atheros driver and decided to disable it from startup through msconfig. Now the laptop runs fine, but whenever I lose wireless signal, it blue-screens once again.

Has anyone faced this problem, how have you fixed it?

It is the Atheros driver bundled with the D-Link wireless card/router that is the problem. Did a search on the net - looks like others are suffering too. Problem disappeared after I disabled the startup service and reinstalled new drivers from D-Link.

BTW the driver that I am supposed to use (as per D-Link) does not work for me, the driver I am NOT supposed to use, actually works. How stupid is that?

Its a new version of the same driver ar5211.sys with a date of 9/10/2004. The earlier driver had a date of 7/7/2004. There is no version number in the name or in the properties that I could find.

Okedoke, thanks. I've seen some others with the atheros problem too and just wanted to confirm there was some update or resolution available.
