A few days ago I had some sort of malware on my system. It was a pop up that advertised that there was adware or spyware on my system. I knew it was junk because of misspellings and it kept popping up around every 5 minutes. I was able to get it cleaned off and removed, but then I realized I had another problem. I don't have a control panel and no administrative rights. They both seem to be seriously gone because I went into safe mode and even ran a windows repair install and added back all of the updates and service packs that were removed when I did the repair with the exact same result. What can be done about this? I'm the administrator account and don't know what to try next. System restore doesn't work for me either.

fresh installation sounds the best bet to me, no point messing around if that much damage has been caused. careful copying old files back to a new installation incase of infection also!

jim4man your approach is extreme

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

NOTE: If you have downloaded ComboFix previously please delete that version and download it again!

Download this file :

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Download Superantispyware (SAS) free home version

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
· It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
· Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
· Click the Scanning Control tab.
· Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
o Close browsers before scanning
o Scan for tracking cookies
o Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
o Please leave the others as they were.
o Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
· On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
· On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
· On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
· Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
· After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
· Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
· It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
· To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
o After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
o Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
o Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
o It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
o Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
· Click close and close again to exit the program.
· Please paste that information here for me regardless of what it finds with a new HijackThis log .

This will take some time!!!!!!!!

After running ComboFix I then ran the SuperAntiSpyware program and all of a sudden I get this blue screen that I have been getting every so often the last few weeks. It's a STOP: 0x0000009c(0x00000002, 0x8054D570, 0xF6002000, 0x0000017)"MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION"

It resetted my computer, but I have my control panel back and administrative rights back, but the scan never completed and I'm worried that the blue screen's going to pop back up again. Any advice on where to go from here? I know it might have to do with hardware.

The P2P programs you have installed expose you to risks because of the nature of the P2P file sharing process. File sharing/P2P programs rely on members giving and gaining unrestricted access to computers across the P2P network. This practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. It also exposes you to very malicious worms and trojans. You change those risky default settings to a safer configuration but the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection.

Go to add/remove programs and remove LimeWire and BitTorrent.
Also remove these if you did not install them.
Viewpoint Manager

Reboot the machine.

Run this online scan:
Trend Micro HouseCall
Post the results with a new hijackthis log.

I ran the SUPERAntispyware program and wanted to post the entire log file, but it says that it's too many characters long to post. Is there any alternatives because I don't want to post it without all of the important information?

Please post the resulting log here as an attachment.

  • Click on the orange Post a Reply! button
  • scroll down to Manage Attachments
  • Click in the box that says Upload File from your Computer
  • Click the Browse... button and find the file then click open
  • Click the Upload button
  • Wait until you see Current Attachment and your file name
  • Click on Close this window
  • Then submit the reply.

Well, SUPERAntispyware didn't make a difference so I decided to run AdAware and Spybot and after I ran those and restarted the computer, everything worked fine again so it seems like the problems cleared up.

You can and should remove all of the tools I requested you to download and/or folders associated with them now. It is pointless to keep these tools around as they are updated so frequently that the tools can be outdated within a few days, sometimes within just hours.

OTMoveIt by OldTimer has a CleanUp! option you can use to remove most of the fixes and associated files and folders if you want to use that. If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTMoveIt attempting to contact the internet you should allow it to do so.

It's a good idea to Flush your System Restore after removing malware:
Turn off system restore and then turn it back on:

Clean up your PC
