    Hiya

A mate of mine has just board a new motherboard, an Asus.

Anyway, inside the box was some granules. I mentioned that you usually get a paste, so assumed it was the old silica gel that many people put in packages.

But, he has just told me it says CPU granules. How do you use this instead of the white paste that you get?

I can find out more when I get home, as its a Lads night in tonight.

    Thanks in advance

    Eddie,

I am with you that this is silica gel packaging for moisture. A couple of reasons, he bought a motherboard, not a cpu or heatsink. A motherboard would not ship with thermal compund of any kind. Next, I have never seen or heard of granules for a cpu. And last, my Asus board did have silica gel packed with it.

    Thanks rugrat

Not that 'up' on the hardware stuff, but I'll tell him before we start to drink :p

I'll confirm that its the silica, when he brings it round tonight

If you attempt to use those granules for heat sink compound, I predict it'll be a short test before you're shopping for another processor. ;)

    Eddie,
Just curious, did the paste ship with the board? I am thinking Asus owes me about .25 us :D

Eddie, I suggest that your friend use Arctic Silver 3 thermal compound in place of whatever generic white thermal compound comes with the heatsink. It's guaranteed that his cpu temp will be at least 3-5c lower than if he used the generic white goop.

He told me it was with the MB, but then I found out it was shipped with the fan he bought at Dabs, along with his CPU.

    No refund for you :p

max: Thanks for the info. He's already got it installed, but I'll have a look into that, as I get all my mates spare parts, to build some more PC's.
