    Hey all,

First timer here with very little computer experience. I've been browsing the forum via google, and I noticed a bunch of people had the same problems as I do right now. However, I have no idea if I have the same problem as them, and I would be grateful if someone walked me through this. I have a DELL latitude D620 running XP SP3. I use McAfee Total protection 2012.

Basically, in the past month or so, my CPU has been gradually increasing to the point where every couple of seconds it becomes 100%. The computer is still usable, but it overheats signficantly and I want to catch the problem (if there is one) before it becomes worse. The biggest contributers to this problem are services.exe and about 8 different svchost.exe running at once (sometimes ALOT more than that). These typically take up at least 50% of the CPU at any given time.

Considering the massive number of programs and services that your computer has auto-starting and running in the background, it's no surprise that the CPU usage is high.

It's also my guess it has a lengthly startup time and runs like a turtle at times.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

    Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

    It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Click Start - Run, then type in

    %temp%

    and then click OK.

Click Start - Run, then type in

    c:\windows\temp

    and then click OK.

Once those 2 temp folders appear and you can view their contents, select and delete EVERYTHING that's inside them.

If a few files resist being deleted, that's normal behavior. Leave them alone and delete EVERYTHING else.

After you're done, restart the computer.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

The Dell Latitude D620 laptop supports up to 4 GB of RAM. How much RAM does yours have?

If you don't know for sure, right-click MY COMPUTER and then click Properties. The amount will be at the bottom of the "General" tab.

While I'm reviewing your "uninstall_list.txt" log, go to Add Or Remove Programs and uninstall Windows Defender.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 users are stuck with it and can only disable it, but it can be uninstalled in Windows XP because it's not integrated in it.

Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin needs to be updated to version 11.1.102.55

Adobe Flash Player ActiveX(unknown version) needs to be updated to version 11.1.102.55

Java(TM) 6 Update 29 needs to be updated to version 1.6.0.30(6 Update 30)

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.51.2.1300 needs to be installed.

Mozilla Firefox 8.0 needs to be updated to version 8.0.1

Skype 4.2 needs to be updated to version 5.6.0.110
If you no longer need or use it, uninstall it instead.

SUPERAntiSpyware 5.0.0.1142 needs to be installed.

Click the green icon with white arrow at each site to download and save them.

After they've all been downloaded and saved, close all open browser windows.

Install and update them as needed.

There's no need to uninstall the old version before installing the new version because the new version will overwrite and replace the old version.

Restart your computer if prompted to so the install process can finish.

Do NOT run any scans yet after you install Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware.

    ----------------------------------------------------

Did you have any trouble with deleting the accumulation of temp files in those 2 temp folders?

    ----------------------------------------------------

Do you still have McAfee SiteAdvisor in that computer, or has it been uninstalled?

The HiJackThis scan log is showing several phantom entries for it.

The temp folders had over 16,000 files combined, and took about 3-5 minutes to delete. The %temp% folder kinda hanged for a little during the deletion, but it ended up working.

I'll get on to the downloading now. thanks

    Downloaded.

I had a problem with McAfee installation such that it would freeze during installation. What I ended up doign was first installing it with all the files, and that slowed my computer down considerably. SiteAdvisor was included in that install. I then uninstalled McAfee from my computer, and reinstalled again without all the extras. Now I just use the Total Protection part without Site Advisor.

If those 2 temp folders were that massively-filled with temp files, it would be normal for the deletion process to "hang" for a short time. The main thing is that the files deleted.

After you finish with all the installing and updating and have restarted the computer for the last time, run the previous instructions again for %temp% so you can clean out that temp folder again.

    Okay, thanks.

We'll delete the log entries for McAfee SiteAdvisor later.

Alright, restarted and did the %temp% delete. The SUPERAntiSpyware program seems to now run in the background upon start-up, if that matters.

Also, if it helps, McAfee scans tend to run up to 5-8 hrs on my computer. I assume that has something to do with the number of files I have on computer. If that can be fixed as well, that would be a lifesaver.

Start SUPERAntiSpyware, then click "Preferences", then uncheck the top 2 boxes in "Startup Options", then close SUPERAntiSpyware.

Go to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab, then uncheck the SUPERAntiSpyware entry, then click Apply - OK/Close - Restart.

When the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore its message. Put a checkmark in the lower left of that window before you click OK to close it.

The bug icon should now be gone from the taskbar.

    ---------------------------------------------------------

I don't know how often you run a scan with McAfee, but there's no need for it to automatically run a scheduled scan every day.

Besides the scanning process bogging down your computer, a daily scheduled scan isn't necessary.

Go back to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down the names in the "Startup Item" column that have a checkmark next to them.

If the column isn't wide enough to see the entire names of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list, and make sure to spell them exactly as you see them there.

I'll then advise you which ones to uncheck.

I changed the preferences of SUPERSpyware, but the SuperSpyware item was not in the startup tab under msconfig.

Copy+Pasting the list wasn't formatted right, so I uploaded the .txt I wrote it on.

I need the exact names in the "Startup Item" column.

That's why I gave you specific steps in post #13.

    -----------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

Save the new log that appears, then submit it here.
