    Hey everybody

Recently have got a new comp with pretty good specs (xp media centre edition), and plenty of ram and memory. However I have noticied that now and again i will get a crash or a hang. Typically when i exit MSN messenger it will crash and stop responding. I have also noticed that sometimes my sound doesnt work. Then when i restart it will be fine again! I know this shouldnt be happeneing on a new comp but not sure how to solve this problem or even if this is in the right topic.

    Thanks for the help

well usually sort of stops responding and doesnt let me exit it, but the rest of the comp will work usually so its just a program crash really.

and what do u mean by "brand" kombat.

might try to reinstall msn although not sure how that will help

    DELL DIMENSION 5150

Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre Edition
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 2

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3 GHz

    1 GB of RAM

    144 GB of memory

It quite new!! Its not exactly a big problem, but just a little annoyin. Do all computers do this, is it just something I have to put up with?! Also sometimes the no sound is coupled with songs going really quickly in media player and ITunes.
But its the Msn messenger crash everytime when closing it down which is the most annoying

    any suggestions?

    cheers

Is msn messenger at all a "fragile" piece of software or is it my comp?

No, not all PCs running Media Center do this.

Do you mean that when you exit, or log off MSN messenger, the system crashes?

How many days have you had your brand new computer? Within 30 days, you can return items to Dell.

Please download hijackthis, install to C:\program files\HijackThis.
run HJT. Save a log. Post the log within the body of a reply, rather than as an attachment. I would like to know which programs you have running. I would like to know, not so much if you might have a virus or spyware, but if there is something that interferes with MSN Messenger?

Be sure MSN messenger is running when you run HJT. Be sure Internet Explorer, MSN Explorer, FireFox, Opera & any other browsers are NOT running. Reboot before opening any browser.

Start > control panel > admin tools > event viewer
system > do you see any errors. If so, please provide the event ID, source & description for errors that occur when the MSN problem occurs.
    Do the same for applications.

    Hey thanks for the reply,

    Please find the log below.

The computer is about 2 months old, and runs great apart from an annoying freeze/not responding/ when i close msn. I literally press log out and it just doesnt do anything and when i try to close it is not responding and i cant get rid of it even with task manager for a few mins. This happens most of the time, not every time i may add.

So i agree with u, it probably is a compatibility issue rather than a problem with security. I run McAfee firewall and do an adaware now and again. Only cookies ever found.

Regarding the system event viewer there are some errors; wasnt sure how to bring up just the errors so i have attached the entire list. Dont really record the time of the msn errors so not sure which ones are related.
    thanks for the help

    cheers

    Regarding C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllhost.exe

    Please look at
    http://castlecops.com/O23.html .

You might want to move this thread to the "security" forum.

    Yes, it is confusing.

I hope a moderator responds, soon, also, to clarify the issue.
